Shakes ‘Disneyland’ 12th March 2007 Hot! Hot! Hot! / Vladivar Foundation Having announced their arrival to the wider world with their debut single ‘Sister Self Doubt’ in 2006, Shakes are set to unleash ‘Disneyland’ on 12th March 2007.Shakes are the Isle Of Wight’s Matt & Darren Farrow. The past twelve months have seen Shakes make a splash with their blend of punk-funk and jacking electro. Citing Adam & The Ants, DFA, Ivan Smagghe and Optimo as key influences, Shakes are making dance music in a way that nobody else is at the moment. Their main stage, genre-straddling electro rock marks them out as natural heirs to the Chemical Brothers and Underworld. Already featuring on a variety of mix compilations coming out early this year, ranging from Modular’s Leave Them All Behind 2 and Wall Of Sound’s ShockRock through to the new Fabric32: Luke Slater album, Shakes are proving themselves to be a different proposition to the New Orderisms and Gallic-influenced glitch-house of their contemporaries. With a true understanding of the mechanics of what makes great dance music, Shakes combine the pyrotechnic thrills of Jilted Generation Prodigy with the more subtle nuanced production of classic Detroit techno and Chicago house.

‘Disneyland’ showcases many sides of Shakes versatile and invigorating sound. Having evolved from a guitar-led early demo to a funked-up bouncy stomp and eventually ending up as a full-on bass-driven behemoth, ‘Disneyland’ is found on this release in all its forms. Similarly to the ‘Sister Self Doubt’ release, ‘Disneyland’ leads with two different versions of the track – Part One and Part Two. ‘Disneyland (Part One)’ is the aforementioned bouncy stomp whilst ‘Disneyland (Part Two)’ takes the original to it’s most fucked-up limits – a surging, unrelenting beast that twists and turns in such a way that you never know quite what to expect it to do next.

The Disneyland package also contains a taster of the live show that’s confirmed Shakes as the dance act to watch. ‘Fuckon’ is a tough, bassy slab of electro, a live highlight which has been winning over punters wherever Shakes have appeared, whether it be at Fabric or the Barfly. 2007 will see Shakes build on the reputation quickly forged since their first ever UK live date in summer 2006, with regular gigging planned around the UK and in Europe throughout the year. Combining their chunky synths with live percussion, it’s an eye-catching live show that blows most of today’s other live electro acts out of the water. Also included is the original version of the track, ‘Disneyland (Audition)’, more Hacienda-flavoured and guitar-led than the new versions, with a gradual build that by the end of the track has you gasping for more.

2007 will also see Shakes establish themselves as sought-after producers for their remix work. With remixes for GoodBooks and Datarock, and a phenomenal reworking of Kasabian’s ‘Shoot The Runner’ last year, the requests are piling up for Shakes to mould new releases into dancefloor bangers. It’s a name you’re gonna see a lot of in 2007.
