Kings Of Leon

Kings Of Leon were the toast of American universities on Wednesday after students selected them to win the top prize at the 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards.

Students across the U.S. voted for their favourite acts to be honoured at the sixth annual ceremony at New York City's Roseland Ballroom hosted by mtvU, the college branch of MTV.

The Sex on Fire hitmakers took home the Woodie of the Year trophy, while actress Zooey Deschanel was on hand to present the Breaking Woodie award to teenage pop star Never Shout Never. Green Day's live concerts were also recognised with the Performing Woodie.

Indie duo Matt and Kim kicked off the show by performing their song Lessons Learned, a track which later scored the Best Video Woodie, taking to the stage with eight back-up dancers who stripped down to their underwear.

Rockers Passion Pit and Death Cab For Cutie also performed, while rappers Clipse thrilled fans by teaming up with hip-hop stars Cam'ron and Rick Ross for a live collaboration. The 2009 Woodie Awards will air in the U.S. on 4 December.
