Blue Flowers Records is pleased to announce the brand new, eagerly anticipated release from Edward Eke, formerly Edward Larrikin, with the double A side ‘Fire Dance’ and ‘O.R.L.D’ under the guise of The Pan I Am.
The 22 year old is now using a family name in order to avoid confusion with his previous band Larrikin Love. The Pan I Am, which came about in 2007, is a fresh and compelling sound that propels Edward towards a new musical direction.
The single is produced by Gareth Jones and Junk Scientist respectively. After releasing a free download ‘Young God / Bad Thing’ (also produced by Junk Scientist) at the end of 2008, Edward entered the studio with producer whiz Gareth Jones (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Depeche Mode, Wire, Liars) and recorded a handful of songs including ‘Fire Dance’.
The track bursts with a visceral energy mixing thundering ritualistic bass lines and fierce sparks of industrial drums with a punchy, melodic backbone and whirling choirs of ominous chanting. It displays one of the many faces of Eke’s TPIA project – a raw and animalistic fervour buzzing with a crazed passion.
The second track from this release ‘O.R.L.D’ sees Eke fuse a cool 50’s croon
with a throbbing electronica, reminiscent of Alan Vega’s Suicide had they ditched New York city for Notting Hill Carnival. The spoken vocals imprinting themselves in the terse yet textured repetitive drums and sub. It features a euphoric chorus where Edward uses the high pitched ‘speed garage’ vocals that he built ‘Young God/Bad Thing’ upon – a particular sound he has admired since his early teens.
Both tracks offer a glance into the world and vast ambition of the young artist. They present a small snippet of the broad spectrum of this multi faceted project. The single release is accompanied by a breathtaking video directed by Edward and long time collaborator, visual artist Alice Lillian, which is circulated via their newborn film label ‘Machine Channel’.
2009 is set to be a hugely productive year for The Pan I Am and for Edward Eke -
this first single is just the beginning. A string of live dates and festival appearances will also be announced shortly.
