Notorious Premier in NYC
The movie which is causing a great deal of excitement within the Hip-Hop world, Notorious, the biopic tale of Brooklyn rapper the Notorious BIG premiered in NYC on Wednesday night.
The slain rapper who was shot while attending an awards ceremony in Los Angeles in 1997 is being played by fellow Brooklyn rapper Jamal ‘Gravy’ Woodard. At the screening at the Lincoln Center were Jay Z, Beyonce, Nas, Jah Rule, Angela Basset who plays the rappers mother Miss Wallace and a slew of other Hip-Hop notables.
Missing from the prestigious screening however was Lil Kim, played in the movie by former 3LW singer Naturi Naughton. Lil Kim and Biggie were involved in a romantic relationship which has often been denied by the rappers Mother and has caused tension between the two women.
During the filming of the movie Miss Wallace has offered to meet with Lil Kim who feels she has never been allowed to tell her story since the rapper and father of two was killed. In conjunction with the premier of the movie on the 16th of January, the rappers son, Christopher Junior rang the bell to start trading on the NYSE yesterday morning.
JD ousted from Island/Def Jam
It has been confirmed that Atlanta mogul Jermaine Dupri who was given the title of President of Island/Def Jam’s urban label has bee fired.
Taking the position at the legendary label back in 2006, Dupri who also brought his So So Def roster to the label after leaving Virgin has overseen Mariah Carey’s album The Emancipation of Mimi.
But sources within the offices of IDJ are saying that Dupri was just not proving lucrative in his highly paid role and due to the lack of sales and the recession. Changes have to be made. It is unclear as to what Dupri will do as of yet with the recently launched TAG records which falls under the IDJ umbrella.
He and girlfriend Janet Jackson have been at the forefront of the media as speculation mounted as to if the two had broke up, but only last month, Dupri confirmed they are very much together.
R Kelly and wife Divorced
Having weathered more than most wives, Andrea Kelly has had her divorce from R&B singer R Kelly finalized this week.
The couple who married in 1996 after Andrea auditioned as a dancer for Kelly. The actual details of the divorce will remain confidential but it is known that the couple will share joint custody of their three children.
Last year R Kelly, famed for songs such as Worlds Greatest and Step in the Name of Love, was acquitted of numerous cases of child pornography stemming from a video which leaked to the internet in 2001 which was said to feature the singer and a girl of 14.
Rihanna told to Cover Up
Like the Pussycat Dolls and Gwen Stefani, R&B sensation Rihanna has been told to cover up by Malaysian officials as she prepares to perform in the country.
The Pussycat Dolls were actually fined $3000 after failing to acknowledge indecency laws in effect in the South East Asian island the first time they visited but last year they opted to cover up and abide by laws, however they covered up in PVC.
Rihanna is performing in Malaysia in February and her team have assured that there will be no cause for concern when it comes to the multi-platinum singers wardrobe for the show.
