TI Takes the Top
As predicted rapper TI took control of the Billboard chart this week, selling 568,000 of his Paper Trail album. This is the third consecutive time the Atlanta rapper born Clifford Harris has in his first week of release sold gold and taken the top spot on the album charts.
The album of which some was recorded while he was on house arrest last year after being charged with various weapons charges features the Swagga Like Us track featuring Jay Z, Lil Wayne and Kanye West and also On Top of the World which sees him align with fellow Atlien Ludacris. The making of this track put an end to all rumors that the two performers shared a personal grievance.
Ti is also set to appear at this years BET Hip-Hop Awards which is taking in place in Atlanta later this month.
M.I.A hitting the Big Time
Underground Sri Lankan/British femcee M.I.A is enjoying the success of her Summer anthem Paper Planes which is in serious rotation in the US and the Uk.
The track which has sold over 1.3 million copies has just peaked at number 4 on the Billboard singles chart.
The mainstream success of the song has in part been linked to the sample of it which was used in Swagga Like Us from TI, Jay Z, Lil Wayne and Kanye West.
But with the new attention on the rapper who is allegedly pregnant, her label, Interscope, have decided to release her 2007 album Kala with extra tracks in early November.
M.I.A will also be launching her own clothing line and record label.
The first act to come off her label will be Rye Rye, the 17 year Baltimore MC who we featured on femalefirst.co.uk back in March. Remember we always give you the heads up on who to watch out for.
Lil Kim Sued
Looks like Lil Kim will be heading back to court yet again after being sued by legendary production duo, The Trackmasters after failing to deliver music for an album.
Tone and Poke who make up the Trackmasters invested over $450,000 in the project and during recording Lil Kim decided to attempt to bring Akon and Wycelf Jean on board which was breaking the contract.
When faced with opposition from the Trackmasters Lil Kim born Kimberly Jones threatened to take the five tracks she had already recorded to another label.
The Trackmasters who have produced for a who is who in the music industry throughout their twenty year career are suing Lil Kim for $2 million.
