Ms Mr hit the album charts for the first time this week with the release of their debut LP ‘Secondhand Rapture’ and whilst it’s been a supercharged start for the New York duo, their ambition could see them achieve great things.
Despite only really hitting the blogosphere last night with their song ‘Hurricane’, the buzz around the pair has been building at an incredible rate of knots, collecting fans from both the critical and musical world in equal measure.
The chemistry between the pair of Lizzy Palpinger and Max Hershenow was instantaneous, with their first song ‘Bones’ being written in under two ours of the pair starting. That’s a mean feat after a fair while together, but for two artists to concoct a tune like ‘Bones’ in less time than it takes to watch a live edition of The X Factor.
Over the last year they’ve been collecting friends and fans in high places, with Jay-Z, Usher amongst the great and good that have been rather taken by Plapinger and Hershenow’s brand of music. It’s not only them that have become enamoured with the pairs sound, as Game Of Thrones crafted its first trailer this year fabulously with their song ‘Bones’ and Pretty Little Liars (a show famed for its musical taste) used their song ‘Salty Sweet’. With Tom Ford also getting in on the act, they really are the act of the moment.
Ms Mr have made a speciality of making their music so cool, it’s verging on going past cold and barrelling straight into freezing. With Lizzy Palpinger’s chilling voice at the core of their music MsMr manage to merge Blondie, Massive Attack and Florence into one alluring package. Something that sounds (in theory at least) like an unbeatable combination.
For years the nonchalant detachment of their music was reflected in the actions of the band. The duo keeping their identities private for a fair amount of time before they finally decided to beak their silence and reveal their faces, and names, to the world.
Their recent decision to come out of the shadows though hasn’t hurt their path to glory though and if they keep rising at the speed they’ve been going at so far, then world nomination might just be one the cards. Watch this space.
