Georgi Kay

Georgi Kay

Georgi Kay has been turning heads in her native Australia for the past couple of years; her beautiful melodies, androgynous looks and heart-breaking voice getting her noticed – and stopping the room – whenever the nineteen-year old singer-songwriter straps on her guitar or takes to the stage.

But 2013 is the year when the word-of-mouth about this Perth-based ingénue becomes international. Having just signed to Regal, an imprint of Parlophone, the very first taste of her mercurial talent comes in the form of a limited double A-side 7” release for Record Store Day.

‘Ipswich’, inspired by the Salem witch trials and drawing on Georgi’s love of horror films and the supernatural, is a dark and brooding slice of magic, its stark and foreboding atmosphere offset by a thrilling stomp and swagger reminiscent of PJ Harvey or Florence + The Machine. Accompanied by a stylish lyric video – click here to view – ‘Ipswich’ has already been championed by influential radio station Triple J in Australia and is now available on iTunes here in the UK.

‘In My Mind’ by contrast started life as a dance track that Georgi co-wrote with Ivan Gough and Feenixpawl (listen to that version here), and is familiar to millions through its inclusion on Swedish House Mafia’s ‘Until One’ album and as a highlight of their live set. Remixed by SHM’s Axwell it won an ARIA for ‘Best Dance Recording’ in 2012 and was Grammy-nominated last month for ‘Best Remix’. Yet here, Georgi strips it back to its bare bones where it becomes an affecting and haunting song of rare beauty.

Georgi Kay may be young but she has the experience and skills of songwriters twice her age. Having won her first award for songwriting at just 17 for her track ‘Breakfast In Bedlam’ which won Song of the Year in Australia, she has toured her homeland with Ed Sheeran and recently attended the Sundance Festival in Utah where she performed songs at the premiere of the forthcoming series ‘Top Of The Lake’, for which she wrote the music and plays the role of ‘troubled’ young musician Melissa. The series is currently being screened in the US, Australia and New Zealand and will follow in the UK later this year on the BBC.

‘Ipswich / In My Mind’ is released on limited 7” vinyl on April 20th
