'Birthday'

'Birthday'

Katy Perry (or rather her label) have decided that her fourth single to be lifted from hugely successful album 'PRISM' is to be 'Birthday'.

While that is probably a solid choice and will likely secure her another place firmly at the top of the charts, we can't help but think there were at least five other songs we would have released before this one. But then, we absolutely loved 'Unconditionally', and look what happened with that one...

Regardless, here are our five picks for single number four:

1) Legendary Lovers

It's happy, light and fluffy just like the Katy Perry we've always loved, and is the song that should have gotten the Egyptian music video treatment rather than 'Dark Horse'. (Yes, I'm still bitter there was no witch/medieval theme.)

2) Walking On Air

A fantastic throwback to the 90's, and a song that managed to find its way in the charts despite never officially being released. Katy performed it two or three times and it sounded great live, so it's disappointing to see it's now been cast aside, as I believe it truly had the potential to be something special.

3) Love Me

Like nothing we've heard from Katy before, it's emotional and powerful without being too overbearing. "I'm gonna love myself the way I want you to love me" she sings, and we can't help but wonder just who she's singing about or directly to...

4) Double Rainbow

OK - so this song was definitely better when Katy and John Mayer were still together, as she confesses exactly what it is about her lover that she adores, but it still holds some of the charm that was used to create it.

5) Spiritual

Opening with a sequence that doesn't sound a million miles away from All Saints' 'Pure Shores', Katy is once again pushing the boundaries of what we've heard before and offering up something different for us all to indulge in. One of the album's hidden gems that doesn't get nearly enough attention.
