Swedish DJ Avicii took last year by the horns and delivered multiple hits including 'Wake Me Up' and 'Hey Brother', delighting fans all across the globe.
Both of these tracks did something we haven't seen much of in pop music before, by infusing a little bit of country, culminating in one of the most exciting combinations since Calvin Harris and David Guetta made dance-pop the norm.
The impact that this has had has been phenomenal, with tracks such as Pitbull and Ke$ha's 'Timber' running with the same idea and finding themselves at the top of the charts.
In this reinvention the lines between genres in music are blurred even further, and it's getting harder to categorise new tracks day by day - but does it really matter?
So long as quality, fresh and exciting tracks are being put out, we can feel safe in the knowledge that our ears will continue to be blessed time and time again with new sounds.
Who knows just what is around the corner? Perhaps a new dawn of 'screamo' will find its way into our favourite Gaga and Rihanna hits? Yeah, probably not...
