In a new survey commissioned by music streaming service Deezer - which is launching its new Lyrics function - it has been revealed that the UK as a nation often gets the lyrics wrong to some of the most popular Christmas classics.

Do you know all your Christmas favourites?

Do you know all your Christmas favourites?

At the top of the list is the traditional 'Jingle Bells', but whether or not the mistakes made in it are by mistake or on purpose is up for debate. An example of a mis-sung lyric from a Brit in the tune is: "Bells on cocktail rings", when in fact it should go: "Bells on bobtail ring".

Second is The Pogue's Fairytale of New York which one person thought said: "You're a bum, you're a punk, you're an old glutton drunk", but what it actually says is: "You're a bum, you're a punk, you're an old slut on junk".

It's also been noted that we're fairly creative in coming up with our own renditions of songs, replacing lyrics with ones that fit for our personal tastes.

Those questioned came up with lines such as "We three kings of Liverpool are" and "Walking in our winter underwear" amongst others, and some classic lines from school meant we couldn't get away with them, one notably being: "While Shepherd's wash their socks at night".

Revealed in the survey of 2,000 Brits was that those in the West Midlands (55%) take their sing alongs most seriously and are least likely to sing the wrong lyrics.

Unfortunately for the Welsh, it's they who are likely to get the lyrics wrong with 62% of those surveyed revealing their mistakes, or confusion about whether or not what they're singing is correct.

MD for UK and Ireland at Deezer, Christian Harris said: "Brits love nothing more than getting into the festive spirit by turning on their Christmas playlist at the start of December, belting out Christmas hits for far too long, with somewhat questionable misheard lyrics! We're hoping to nip any sherry-induced confusion in the bud this year before the festive party season is truly underway, with Deezer's new Lyrics feature."
