Instantly realising that she wanted to do the 'Pretty Hurts' music video with Melina Matsoukas, Beyoncé teamed up with the director for a film like none she'd ever done before.
"The concept behind the video is really a behind the scenes look into society's take on beauty and how it doesn't bring you happiness and it doesn't move you forward in life... it's really finding yourself that brings you to happiness." says Melina in the behind the scenes video below.
"It represents all of the things women go through to keep up with the pressure that society puts on us." says Beyoncé whilst pretending to get a face lift and botox.
"Some of the things that young women go through are just really heartbreaking for me." she continues, as clips of the video including a model eating cotton balls play.
Not many of the shots were planned - set-ups were laid out and things naturally happened that were documented for the video, bringing a sense of realism to the movie.
