The Japanese Popstars are Gary Curran, Declan ‘Decky Hedrock’ McLaughlin and Gareth Donoghue. These three lads from Northern Ireland have been racking up the air miles, carving out a global reputation to rival the biggest names in dance music as a must-see live act and purveyor of raucous, foot-stomping, energetic electronic dance music.
The band have recently performed live at MTV Live At Ulster Hall in Belfast on Saturday 5th November, opening up for British rock juggernauts Kasabian.
Their performance is being broadcast across the MTV networks from 19th November. Last weekend saw the boys perform at the Lynx All Nighter at The Coronet in London alongside Alex Metric & Calvin Harris.
The Japanese Popstars are also preparing for the release their new single, ‘Shells Of Silver’. One of the slower tempo songs from their new album ‘Controlling Your Allegiance’, it features the rich melancholic vocals of Irish folk artist, James Vincent McMorrow.
The release comes with three great remixes: Maxxi Soundsystem, aka Brighton duo Sam Watts and Neal Lewis, excel with their deep slo-motion House joint.
Superstringz keep the tempo down with a Nu-Wave flavoured interpretation. Finally, The White Sea remix (M83 vocalist Morgan Kibby) builds dramatic tension over its length, layering haunting vocals and twirling synths, creating an intense opus.
‘Shells Of Silver is taken from the band’s second album ‘Controlling Your Allegiance’. The album includes their previous singles 'Let Go', a storming, tumultuous, twisted, electro barrage featuring Chicago house legend Green Velvet, 'Destroy' with Jon Spencer's idiosyncratic and eerily compelling vocal, ‘Song For Lisa featuring the glacial tones of Lisa Hannigan, and ‘Take Forever’ with the legendary Robert Smith.
Released exclusively on Beatport a few weeks ago was the ‘Controlling Your Allegiance Remix EP’ featuring previously unreleased remixes of key album tracks.
The Japanese Popstars have been blowing away crowds at major festivals with their live show. Highlights this year have included Glastonbury, I.M.S (Ibiza), Dance Here Now and Camp Bisco (New York), Rockness, and the Secret Garden Party.
Forthcoming live shows:
