Owl City - Ocean Eyes

Owl City - Ocean Eyes

Owl City’s single ‘Fireflies’ has already sold over 3 million copies in the US, topped the Billboard chart - twice - and the iTunes chart in 7 countries, yet he is still relatively unknown in the UK.

However, seemingly out of nowhere 'Fireflies' topped the UK charts on 24th January and has remained at the top spot as sales figures soared above those of its competitors.

Adam Young, the talented young man behind Owl City, who counts fellow surrealist Tim Burton in his ever growing list of admirers – so much so that he has just included his track ‘The Technicolor Phase’ in the forthcoming soundtrack to Alice in Wonderland – is modestly taking his latest chart topping success in his stride.

“It hasn't quite sunk in yet and I suspect it never really will. It's surreal to think that a song I wrote in a basement in the middle of blustery Minnesota has made it as far as it has. Needless to say, I'm completely thrilled.”

With his new-found fame still ringing in his ears, Adam takes a minute to talk us through his new album, Ocean Eyes, track by track…

Cave In is about the "great unknown" and constantly wondering about what else lies out there, what adventures are waiting to be had, what dreams may come. It's about striving for endurance and integrity.

The Bird and the Worm is a little song about an incredibly romantic bird and worm and the idea of the world being FULL of friends, even under the sea. It's about relationships that are too good to be true.

Hello Seattle is a song about growing up in Minnesota, imagining what the city of Seattle was like without having visited. It's about daydreams and imaginings where you are things that dwell in/around the Emerald City, thus giving the listener a first person view.

Umbrella Beach is about a hermit living in a box car on the edge of the shoreline that corroded so badly, it wound up at the bottom of the bay. Rather than finding a new home, the hermit chooses to learn to scuba dive and now spends his days deep under the waves in his boxcar.

The Saltwater Room is about swimming class in junior high.

Dental Care is about people all over the world riding in cars on the way to the dentist and that queasy feeling that inevitably ensues.

Meteor Shower is about my faith, the reason I do what I do, and most importantly, the One I cling to with all strength and vigor that is left in me.

On The Wing
is about jumping off the peaks of mountains and taking flight.

Fireflies is a little song about bugs and not being able to fall asleep at night.

Vanilla Twilight
is a song about a girl.

Tidal Wave is about running hard and racing for the prize with both eyes locked on the finish line so that one day, the words "Well done, good and faithful servant" might be heard.

Strawberry Avalanche
is about two kids camping out in sleeping bags in the backyard and imagining what a strawberry avalanche would be like.

Hot Air Balloon is a carefree song about adventure and exploration. Looking down on the world, leaning out and brushing the snow from evergreen branches, wondering where life will take you.

Rugs From Me To You is a silly song about wigs.

Butterfly Wings is a song about joy, beauty and love that can be found literally anywhere you look. It's all around you if you take the time to really see it.

Sunburn
is about the occasional feeling of not being good enough, despite how hard you try. It's about relationships and find the one that is really meant to last.
