The boys seemed to spring up from nowhere into our charts this summer when their debut single ‘All Time Low’ steamed into the number one spot on the UK singles chart. The single managed to stay in the UK Top 40 for a staggering 11 weeks, before their second single went to number two on the same chart when it was released in October. Their debut album, released in the same month, made it to number four, and is still clinging on in the UK Top 40 after seven weeks in the chart.
Little did we know, The Wanted is a manufactured group. The lads all auditioned separately for Jayne Collins, who also put together The Saturdays, and after numerous rounds of auditions The Wanted were born.
Before he was one fifth of The Wanted Max played football for Preston North End and was reportedly on the verge of signing a two year contract. After that he was part of Avenue, a five piece boy band who made it to the third round of the X Factor before being disqualified for having professional representation. Tom also auditioned for the X Factor but unfortunately didn’t make it past the first round. Siva was born and raised in Ireland with his twin brother and six other siblings, and fellow band member Jay is also a twin. Final band member Nathan represented the UK in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2004 and came third.
Despite falling into the category of manufactured boy bands, it’s clear that the boys have worked for their fame. After being formed the group continued to struggle to make a name for themselves at small clubs and schools. We think they deserve all their success and look forward to seeing them take over the world in 2011.
