Encompassing influences from folk music to country and acoustic soul, ‘Everything You Are’ was written on the road - airport lounges, hotel lobbies, tour buses, dressing rooms, you name it - while Sam was touring the US in his ‘day job’ as guitarist in KT Tunstall’s band.
Thousands of miles away from home, dealing with the slow disintegration of a long-term relationship, and digesting a musical diet of classic American artists, from Hank Williams and Robert Johnson through to Neil Young and Tom Waits, the feel of classic Americana courses through this stripped back, heartfelt album.
The modern blues of ‘Ups And Downs’ (a style recently bought to the fore by the likes of Seasick Steve) sits alongside the love-lorn, country tinged Americana of ‘Another Lifetime’ (featuring the vocals of KT Tunstall) on an always direct and often heart-breakingly emotive and soul-bearing album.
Upon returning from 4 years spent largely on the road with KT, Sam has spent the last few months putting together a live band that could do justice to his solo material. Sam’s intimate live shows resonate with the experience gained through years touring, not only with KT but also with the likes King Creosote, Tom Baxter and Scottish folk legend Burt Jansch, lending a rare maturity to a debut album.
Sam is playing the following live dates throughout March and April, including a residency at the 12bar Club, in London’s West End. A venue that he grew up playing guitar at with his Dad when it was a late night folk speak easy known as The Forge, the 12 Bar was Sam’s first taste of the London live music scene, and a major part of his musical education.
