Lady GaGa, Telephone
Possibly the strangest music video of the year, Lady GaGa’s Telephone video begins in a prison, with GaGa wearing outfits as ridiculous as ever, including one consisting of merely police tape. Booty shaking Beyonce then bails GaGa out of prison before they poison a man and then make a sandwich in a giant kitchen. Strange, but very entertaining and certainly unique.
Cee Loo Green, F**k You
This potty-mouthed song delivers a fun loving music video set in a 50’s diner. Even the two young kids in the video ooze coolness in the presence of Cee Loo Green, so you just can’t help bopping along.
M.I.A, Born Free
When this video was released on Monday April 26 it was removed from YouTube on the same day, replaced with an age restriction and then removed again. The video, which is an astonishing nine minutes long, caused controversy across the nation with its scenes of nudity, war and brutal violence. This video isn’t necessarily pleasant to watch, but it makes this list due to the amount of attention it gained.
McFly, Shine a Light on Her
Mcfly’s latest video is a far cry from their previous ones. Set in a dingy warehouse the video mixes contemporary dance with the lad’s typical band performance that we know and love.
Janelle Monae, Tightrope
The 25 year old is relatively unheard of as of yet, however, this video is definitely worth a mention. Her quirky dance moves are a refreshing change to the usually girly dancing we see from the likes of Girls Aloud. The video takes place at the Palace of the Dogs, and insane asylum where the likes of Charlie Parker and Jimi Hendrix were once admitted.
Chase & Status, Blind Faith
This video will either make you wish you were at a late-night warehouse rave or make you glad that you’re not. Chase & Status released a censored version of this video, presumably to prevent it from being banned as they knew it contained controversial content such as drug abuse.
Katy Perry, California Gurls
This video is set in heaven, well not technically but it’s probably as close as Katy Perry could get. She is surrounded by sweets and cakes, including edible clothing and candy floss clouds. The Alice in Wonderland style video is like every girls fairytale dream world.
Duck Sauce, Barbra Streisand
As soon as you’ve heard this song once it’s bound to be stuck in your head all day long, and the video doesn’t disappoint either. This star studded video features appearances from everyone from Kanye West to Vampire Weekend to Santigold, as well as an impersonation of Barbra Streisand herself that is bound to make you giggle.
Katie Perry, Firework
Making it into this list for the second time is Katy Perry. In the video for her 2010 release, Firework, Katy confronts sensitive issues such as self confidence, bulling and sexual orientation, implying that everyone is different, just like a firework.
Bruno Mars, Just The Way You Are
In this video for his number one single, Bruno Mars draws pictures on a coffee table using the tape he unravels from a cassette. The images he draws come to life and move while the 25 year old serenades a model-like brunette. A truly romantic music video to match the song’s beautiful lyrics.
