DJ Avicii

DJ Avicii

It's been difficult this year to narrow down a list of just 15 songs, as the industry's been on such great form with hit after hit being pumped out in every genre.

Though there are probably a heap more of tracks we could have included, we've managed to crack down on a solid number that have had us dancing, twerking, singing and sobbing our way through the 52 weeks of the year.

OneRepublic - Counting Stars

After a two-year hiatus that seemed utterly too long, the band blasted back onto the scene with a track like none they'd ever released before. Counting Stars went on to sell in countries all over the world, reaching number one in the UK and becoming their biggest selling hit in the country, as well as reaching 4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and becoming their best performing song on those charts since 2007's Apologize.

Avicii - Wake Me Up

Not a day went by this summer when you wouldn't hear Swedish DJ Avicii's Wake Me Up on all the main radio stations multiple times. Bringing EDM into the norm more than ever before, his influence on pop songs from all sorts of artists is now prevelant. The track went on to peak at number one in 22 countries including Australia, the UK and Israel.

P!nk feat. Nate Ruess - Just Give Me A Reason

Teaming up with the lead singer of fun. P!nk managed to prove that she's still got what it takes to release a heavy ballad and make it shine. Exploring the desire of holding onto relationships that have broken down, many were able to relate and bought the song in their scores, sending it on to receive two Grammy nominations including one for Song of the Year.

Katy Perry - Roar

Arguably the biggest pop song of the year, Katy Perry returned with a hit packed full of uplifting beats and a message that she's not one to be held back from reaching her goal. She's definitely put the noses out of joint of other pop contenders in the ring.

Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball

She certainly did come in like a Wrecking Ball, with a brand new persona, look and impact we've never seen from the once-Hannah Montana teen sensation. Managing to anger just about everybody from every corner of the industry, she still won over the public with a great ballad and interesting music video.

Justin Timberlake - Mirrors

The big comeback of one of pop's favourite male stars was absolutely worth the wait, and Mirrors is just one of the hits that the fantastic crooner put out on his return. Long live J.T.

Robin Thicke feat. Pharrell Williams & T.I. - Blurred Lines

Controversial to some, but with his wife in mind, Robin Thicke got to work on a song that would dominate the charts on a global scale. Working alongside Pharrell and T.I. meant that fans from all different genres clubbed together and enjoyed the raunchy Blurred Lines.

Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home feat. Majid Jordan

Being chosen as the second single from his third studio album 'Nothing Was The Same', the track proved how versatile the hip-hop star really is. He hopped into the top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100, and it's easy to see why.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - Same Love

Outlining just how dumbfounded he is at the fact homophobia still exists to this day, throwbacks to his childhood are given in this fantastic message-laden track. It's a call for equality, and presented in a manner like no other.

Lorde - Royals

At first, it was a little creepy. Then we figured it's slightly hypnotic, but it was always absolutely fantastic - and that's all down to the voice of the New Zealander singing the song. Lorde's crooning isn't like anything we've heard before.

Miley Cyrus - We Can't Stop

Another hit from the star who makes the headlines for both the wrong and right reasons. She single-handedly changed the sound of chart music - a massive risk but one that most certainly paid off. The Disney persona was well and truly disposed of, and Miley Cyrus 2.0 was born.

Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams - Get Lucky

It seems that anything Pharrell touches turns to gold, but Daft Punk most definitely had a hand in creating one of the best bops of the past 12 months. The disco funk song is quite sexual, but also more about the fortune of connecting to somebody, according to Williams.

Bastille - Pompeii

Inspired by the town of the same name that met its fate because of an unpredictable eruption from Mount Vesuvius, Bastille managed to take the record for the longest time at number one on the Official Streaming Chart, remaining up top for seven weeks straight.

Rudimental feat. Ella Eyre - Waiting All Night

Ella Eyre's stunning vocals were put on this incredible track, which is warm, rising and perfect for any night out. Not one you'd want to miss out on in the clubs.

Eminem feat. Rihanna - The Monster

Just when we thought we'd gotten over the amazing collaborations that were Love The Way You Like parts one and two, Eminem and Rihanna joined once more for a fantastic new track - The Monster. Acting as Em's psychologist, Rihanna takes a trip through the past with the rapper in an infectious song with a beasty hook.
