Miley Cyrus has been a major star this year

Music became the topic on everybody's lips this year, and if it wasn't the outfits our favourite musicians were wearing on stage that got the world talking, it was the music videos released that raised many an eyebrow.

Petitions have been launched because of such videos, stating that children shouldn't be allowed to be subjected to clips of such a sexual nature, but artists have hit back saying that videos are their way of expression, and those who don't like them should keep an eye on what their children is viewing on the internet.

Putting all that aside, we've decided to take a look at some of the biggest and best music videos this year had to offer.

Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines

He stated he wrote the song about his wife, knowing she wants it because of their long relationship and describing her as a "good girl". The music video - featuring a whole host of topless women - was actually pushed for by his partner as well, but that didn't stop critics from wading in with their own opinions on why this sort of thing doesn't have a place in the music industry. The explicit video was banned from YouTube, but that didn't stop it from becoming one of the most-talked about videos the year had to offer.

Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball

She's certainly had an interesting year, with a complete change in persona and attitude. Believing she can do no wrong, she enlisted the help of Terry Richardson to get the Wrecking Ball music video completed, and in doing so found herself nude atop the wrecking device, just before licking a sledgehammer and truly doing some damage.

Kanye West - Bound 2

One of the globe's biggest couples got the world talking with the release of Kanye West's video for 'Bound 2'. Straddling him atop a motorbike and dodgy backdrop, Kim appeared topless and the pair looked as if they were simulating sex - much to the shock of fans all over the world.

Lorde - Royals

In creating this video, Lorde hopes to help her audience truly understand what she was trying to get across with the major hit single 'Royals'. Is she truly in need of all the finer things in life? No, and she doesn't care that her life isn't as exciting as what goes down on the television - well - it wasn't, before the song completely blew up and sent her soaring to stardom. Let's hope fame doesn't change the opinionated star.

Lady Gaga - Applause

After a hip injury that forced her to cancel a large chunk of her Born This Way Ball tour, Lady Gaga returned with one of the funkiest pop songs of the year, and the video managed to pay homage to some of the biggest names in the world of art and expression. It's truly creative, a little creepy at times, but always a pleasure to watch.

Katy Perry - Roar

Katy managed to remain charming throughout this video as she crash lands into a jungle with her annoying partner, who doesn't survive long. She makes friends with the animals and soon becomes the leader - it's a fun video that was much-needed to take some of the heat off of the female popstars of today.

Rihanna - Stay

The stunning ballad remained simple yet effective with a black and white video, tearing at our hearts as we all secretly wiped away tears cried simultaneously with bathtub Rih-Rih. Sure, she brought the filthy side back out in Pour It Up, but this is the video we'd like to remember from the popstar in 2013.

Miley Cyrus - We Can't Stop

No-one can deny the impact she's had this year, and so we just had to feature Miley twice in our list. We Can't Stop was the song that solidified her new image on the music scene, and we all watched on in confusion as giant teddies and stuffed animals became part of one big major party.

Beyonce - Pretty Hurts

She blew the competition out of the water, and she didn't even need to hype her fifth studio and visual album to do so. Featuring a mammoth 17 music videos, it was difficult to pick just one, but Pretty Hurts is a fantastic look at how the beauty and pageant industry can really adversely affect a person's soul. This track could be Beyonce's 'Beautiful' or 'Born This Way'.

One Direction - Story Of My Life

They managed to put a smile on our faces with photographs of their loved ones in this video, and proved that they're not just a teen-loved boyband, but a group of five young men who have the ability to appeal to members of the public of all ages.
