According to new research by ticketing agent Skiddle, a growing number of Brits are now travelling thousands of miles to get their festival fixes rather than going on traditional summer holidays.
A survey of 1,156 Brits saw 27% claim they'd spent time overseas at a festival, whilst almost half (45%) have plans to attend a festival abroad within the next 12 months.
Though in general UK festivals do gain the most Brits through the doors, overseas events such as Electric Elephant and Secret Garden Party in Croatia, Exit in Serbia, Captured Festival in Ibiza and Spanish festivals Sonar and Benicassim are growing in popularity as each year passes by.
Co-founder and technical director at Skiddle Ben Sebborn commented: "Although the UK boasts a world famous festival scene, and ones we don't think can ever be beaten, we've noticed a real increase in people choosing overseas festivals. The combination of the great acts these festivals pull in, and the added benefit of nearly-guaranteed glorious sunshine has really boosted the popularity of overseas events."
The survey results also revealed that the average person attending a music festival spends £412.20, including the price of ticket, spending money, festival essentials and travel.
15% of those questioned said they met a significant other at a festival, with 1 in 5 admitting to having a one night stand and 1 in 10 knowing someone who's got married at a festival.
7% have been to a festival hen or stag do, and a surprising 53% have been to one with their parents, or know somebody who has.
Another surprise may be that 68% have taken their child to a festival or know someone who has, but unsurprisingly 65% have made new friends at a festival.
Reasons for attending the festivals range from the music (95%) to socialising (67%) and partying (73%), while others want a break from work (48%), go because friends or family are going (48%) or want a new experience (44%).
