Rock superstars U2 are hoping to headline the 2011 Glastonbury festival, after BONO's back injury forced the band to pull out of this summer's event.

The Irish band were replaced by Gorillaz, while Bono underwent surgery to fix severe compression of the sciatic nerve. Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis quickly invited U2 to star at next year's festival, and the band members have revealed the 2011 event coincides with a gap in their touring schedule.

A post on the band's official website reads, "There is a gap in the band's schedule ahead of the East Lansing show on 26 June which would make (playing) the Friday night (at Glastonbury) a possibility".

When pressed for confirmation, U2 manager Paul McGuinness, offered a cryptic reply, adding, "We're certainly excited about our plans for next year. Watch this space!"
