Maxïmo Park will be the first band to kick off Glastonbury festival when they play an intimate show at 4pm on Thursday 25th June in the brand new William’s Green area.
The launch gig was the brainchild of Tuborg, the official beer of Glastonbury, in response to a request from the festival organisers to make attendees aware of the new area. A spokesperson for Glastonbury said: “We are really excited about this extra special Maxïmo Park gig to kick off the festival. William’s Green is brand new for 2009, what better way to introduce festival goers to the area.”
Maxïmo Park, who will also play the Other Stage on the Saturday night, will be performing this exclusive gig to the first 1500 festival goers to make their way to Playstation’s Queen’s Head in the Williams Green area. The gig will also be broadcast on big screens for those not lucky enough to be in the venue.
Paul Smith, lead singer of Maxïmo Park said: "Glastonbury's still a festival that takes chances, as proven by Jay-Z's triumphant appearance last year, so it's an honour for us to be the first band on, in such intimate surroundings. It's also an excuse to hang out and watch loads of brilliant music 'til we play the Other Stage on Saturday!"
Maxïmo Park’s third album “Quicken the Heart” is released this week; recorded and produced in LA by Nick Launay (who has also worked with luminaries such as Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Nick Cave and Talking Heads among others). The band’s first album “A Certain Trigger” was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.
Their second, “Our Earthly Pleasures” hit Number 2 in the UK charts. “Quicken the Heart” is an astounding step in the evolution for one of Britain’s best-loved bands, at once a consolidation of their brilliance and the perfect synthesis of innovation and dynamism.
Named after Michael Eavis' grandfather, the first person to plant crops at Worthy Farm, William's Green is a new destination at the festival, with two venues, the hugely successful Tuborg bar at Playstation’s Queen's Head and the new Snug. Located on the road from The Pyramid to the Acoustic Field, William's Green also boasts some great eating and shopping locations, including the exotic Cha Wallah's.
Official festival beer Tuborg will also be offering one lucky drinker the chance to win an exclusive VIP package complete with backstage passes in their mystery drinker promotion on Wednesday 24 June. For those not lucky enough to win the main mystery drinker prize Tuborg will also be hosting free giveaways throughout the festival with prizes ranging from a subscription to Q to a year’s free supply of Tuborg.
