U.S. Hip-hop star Jay-Z, could only pull a small crowd to his performance though he was greeted by chants and cheers.

The New York hip-hop star looked completely out of place at the festival earlier Noel Gallagher had voiced his objections to the BBC saying hip-hop was "wrong" for Glastonbury. But in a swipe at his critics Jay-Z took the stage to the strains of the Oasis hit Wonderwall.

Beyonce, Coldplay star Chris Martin, Pharrell Williams, LinkinPark, and Rihanna had all been rumoured to be joining him on stage, but none appeared which did disappoint many of the faithful

The star then pleased the crowd shouting "So they say you guys didn't want me here to be here tonight, They said you guys weren't into hip-hop." This brought roars of approval as they responded by chanting his name.

The crowd went raved at the star's performance as he sang his hits including 99 Problems, Hard Knock Life and Encore, to win over the festival-goers who were disagreed with his appearance.

But one disappointment was the lack of any surprise guests.

Meanwhile Amy Winehouse returned to the stage at the Glastonbury Festival amid controversy as she appeared to punch at a fan.

She lashed out at someone who tried to grab her hair as she finished her set alongside fans in front of the stage, her spokesman said.
