Nicola Benedetti presents her third album, a programme of entirely British music focusing on two composers from different eras: Ralph Vaughan Williams and Sir John Tavener. Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, composed in 1914, was recently voted the nation’s favourite classical work by Classic FM listeners. Inspired by English folk melodies and George Meredith’s poem of the same name, the violin represents the lark with fluid and lyrical beauty, soaring above sparse and weightless harmonies in the orchestra. This British landmark work is complemented by two brand new works and one arrangement by one of the greatest British composers of our time, Sir John Tavener. Tavener was keen to work with Benedetti having followed her career over recent years, and so Dhyana and Lalishri were written specifically for her. Lalishri was commissioned by the LPO, The South Bank Centre and Tom Hunter and a world premiere performance of Lalishri will take place on 26th September at the newly-refurbished Royal Festival Hall with Andrew Litton and the LPO, who also accompany Benedetti on disc.
