It's a bit of an odd show tonight, because New Yorkers Coheed & Cambria are the only support, with an entire our to themselves. For a band producing tracks that feel like they go on for entire weeks at a time, they managed to fit a good 11 songs into their set.
Coheed's story-telling begins with In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3, and progress through a journey including Here We Are Juggernaut, Neverender and eventually capping off with house favourite Welcome Home. The band do well in a position akin to a co-headline slot, and although arguably not overly fitting to the style of Deftones, pull it off.
When it comes down to business though, Deftones rumble through a behemoth of a 23-song set. Being the Diamond Eyes tour, eight tracks of the 14 found on the album are present, leaving 15 to hark back to the anthemic days of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Here we find My Own Summer (Shove It), Digital Bath, Knife Party, freaky-sex-inspired Passenger and the classic Change (In The House Of Flies).
Chino has the full respect of the audience, with chants of "Chino, Chino, Chino" between sets. Although good natured, the aggressive crowd rips each other up, spinning off multiple circle pits, surging and pushing in time with the beats and lyrics.
Today is a good day to be a Deftones fan. The numerous challenges along the way that almost destroyed the band haven't done so, and the group have come through improved and on better form than ever.
