Divergent

Divergent

To say that young adult novel adaptations have been successful at the box office is a bit of an understatement - the likes of Harry Potter, Twilight and The Hunger Games have been huge hits.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire looks set to continue that trend as it is being tipped as one of the biggest movies of the year - can it go on and break the $1 billion barrier?

And we are going to be seeing plenty of these movies hitting the big screen over the next year, we look at the films that are on the horizon.

- Divergent: is the big new film in this genre next year as Veronica Roth's popular novel gets the big screen treatment.

I have just finished reading the book - in fact I am almost through Insurgent - and I am really looking forward to how this transfers onto the big screen.

Divergent is an interesting look at a dystopian society; while it will inevitably be compared to The Hunger Games, it is completely different with its own set to interesting and complex characters.

Shailene Woodley will take on the central role of Tris, while Theo James, Kate Winslet, Ashley Judd, Zoe Kravitz and Jai Courtney are all on board, while Neil Burger is in the director's chair.

Divergent was one of the most talked about movies at this year's Comic Con in San Diego, and it promises to be a box office smash in the spring.

Divergent is released 4th April 2014.

- The Book Thief: will be hitting the big screen at the end of January and is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Markus Zusak.

The Book Thief is on my 'books to read' list and a copy of it is sitting on my shelf patiently waiting to be read.

Brian Percival is in the director's chair for the film, while Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson are the big names on the cast list.

The movie will also introduce us to the acting talents of Sophie Nelisse, who will take on the role of Liesel.

The Book Thief tells the story of Liesel, an extraordinary and courageous young girl sent to live with a foster family in World War II Germany. She learns to read with encouragement from her new family and Max, a Jewish refugee who they are hiding under the stairs.

For Liesel and Max, the power of words and imagination become the only escape from the tumultuous events happening around them. The Book Thief is a life-affirming story of survival and of the resilience of the human spirit.

The Book Thief is released 31st January 2014.

- Seventh Son: should already have been released but got pushed back into 2015.

The movie is an adaptation of Joseph Delaney's The Spook's Apprentice; the first book in the fantasy series The Wardstone Chronicles.

Seventh son follows Master Gregory, who must train a young apprentice in a bid to defeat the evil Mother Malkin.

Jeff Bridges is on board as Master Gregory, Julianne Moore will play Mother Malkin, while Ben Barns is Tom Ward aka the seventh son.

Djimon Hounsou, Alicia Vikander, Kit Harington and Olivia Williams make up a very exciting cast list.

This is another book that is waiting to be read, but I am interested to see if this film will result in a new fantasy franchise lighting up the big screen.

Seventh Son is released 7th February 2014.

- The Maze Runner: is one of the movies in this genre that is being tipped for real success next year.

The Maze Runner is not a book that I am familiar with - I have just ordered my copy of the James Dashner book.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, young Thomas is deposited in a community of boys after his memory is erased, soon learning they're all trapped in a maze that will require him to join forces with fellow "runners" for a shot at escape.

Director Wes Bell has brought together a cast that includes Dylan O'Brien, Will Poulter, Kaya Scodelario and Patricia Clarkson.

- Vampire Academy: If you are missing your fix of vampires on the big screen then look no further than Vampire Academy.

The movie is a big screen adaptation of the best selling novels by Richelle Mead. Vampire Academy was published back in 2007, and since then there have been five further books.

Rose Hathaway (Deutch) is a Dhampir: half human/vampire, guardians of the Moroi, peaceful, mortal vampires living discretely within our world.

Her legacy is to protect the Moroi from bloodthirsty, immortal Vampires, the Strigoi. This is her story.

Zoey Deutch, Danila Kozlovskiy, Lucy Fry and Olga Kurylenko are all on the cast list, while Mark Waters is in the director's chair.

Vampire Academy is released 19th February 2014.

- Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes: We were introduced to The Mortal Instruments film franchise for the first time earlier this year with City of Bones hit the big screen.

Despite Harald Zwart being in the director's chair and a great cast the movie failed to light up the box office - in truth it only just made back its budget.

Now, I have read all the books and think they are fabulous and fail to see how they could not translate well on to the big screen.

It looked like the franchise was going to go no further when City of Ashes was put on hold... but it looks like we are going to be getting another movie after all.

However, no release date has yet been announced.

- The Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Filming on the next instalment is already underway in Atlanta as the third and final book will be split into two films.

Part 1 will be hitting the big screen next November, while Part 2 will follow in 2015.

Francis Lawrence will return to the director's chair for both movies, as Katniss Everdeen's journey comes to an end.

The beginning of Mockingjay Part 1 will see Katniss become an symbol of mass rebellion as the life that she once knew is now gone.

The Hunger Games series is set to end with a bang - anyone who has read the books will know how epic and heartbreaking it is.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is out now.
