There are a whole host of young actresses on the big screen at the moment and more and more of them are taking on edgier roles.
Some are trying to get away from the Disney image, TV characters they have played in the past or to shake off a blockbuster movie role.
Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens are the latest tow starlets to try it with their new movie Spring Breakers - which is totally different to anything that they have done before.
So we take a look at some of the other young stars who have tackled some interesting roles very recently.
- Selena Gomez & Vanessa Hudgens
Seeing as we have already mentioned Gomez and Hudgens we may as well start with them as they are back on the big screen this week.
Selena Gomez was one of Disney Channel's biggest stars while Vanessa Hudgens had a butter wouldn't melt image after her role in High School Musical.
But the pair are trying to move away from that as they build their acting careers.
And they take another step away from that image this week with Spring Breakers - a movie that sees them team up with director Harmony Korine.
The movie follows a group of friend whose spring vacation turns into a life of crime.
- Kristen Stewart - Welcome to the Rileys & On The Road
Kristen Stewart is one of the biggest actresses in Hollywood at the moment and that is all thanks to her role as Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga.
But now that the Twilight series has come to an end Stewart is moving onto slightly more ambitious roles - a process she started while she was still working on the Twilight films.
Welcome To The Rileys hit the big screen in 2011 and saw Stewart take on the role of stripper Mallory.
This was a film about losing a loved one and life going on as well as a growing bond between James Gandolfini's character and Mallory - he wants her away from this life.
Welcome To The Rileys is a touching movie that saw Stewart tackle a role that we have never seen her in before.
She followed this up last year when she starred in On The Road - the big screen adaptation of Jack Kerouac directed by Walter Salles.
- Blake Lively - The Town & Savages
Blake Lively made her breakthrough playing Serena van der Woodsen in Gossip Girl but, since her move into movies, she has been moving away from that role.
And it all started with her terrific turn in The Town - which was Ben Affleck's second directorial effort.
She takes on a character that is struggling with addiction and she is almost unrecognisable as she really does deliver a terrific performance.
She well and truly leaves Gossip Girl behind with this performance as she shows that there is more to her as an actress.
She tackled crime movie Savages last year and while the movie was a bit of a miss fire you have to admire what she was trying to achieve.
She does the best with what she is given but her performance is perhaps not as hard hitting as it could have been.
- Emily Browning - Sleeping Beauty
In 2011 actress Emily Browning starred in a new take on Sleeping Beauty - a movie that was about unspoken desires.
This was really a very bold move for the actress as this was a very exposing movie for her.
It was a movie that really did split the critics when it was released but Browning gave a great performance in what is an incredibly haunting and atmospheric movie.
- Mia Wasikowska - Stoker
Mia Wasikowska took her career in a little bit of a different direction this year when she starred in Stoker.
This was the pretty role that Alice in Wonderland was as this showed off a very different side to the actress that was incredibly enthralling.
While I wasn't a huge fan of the movie myself Wasikowska's performance in the film is terrific as the rather odd India Stoker.
India is both a victim and a predator in this movie and she balances both aspects well until the great conclusion.
Other actresses that have tried mixing it up include Dakota Fanning, Elizabeth Olsen and Chloe Grace Moretz.
Spring Breakers is released 5th April.
