The Wolverine

The Wolverine

Hugh Jackman is reprising the role of Wolverine this week as The Wolverine is set to hit the big screen.

Jackman has played this iconic role since 2000 and this fifth major film playing this character; it is actually his sixth time if you count the cameo in X-Men: First Class.

So we look back over the first five movies to give you a recap of the Wolverine story so far.

X-Men: We were introduced to the character of Wolverine for the first time back in 2000, when X-Men hit the big screen.

Logan is making his living cage fighting in Canada when he runs into Marie; a runaway with a secret of her own.

While he may have healing abilities, heightened senses and metal claws, he has no memory of who he is or how he ended up the way that he is.

Logan and Marie end up at X-Mansion in Westchester County, New York, after being attacked by Sabretooth and saved by Storm and Cyclops.

Here they meet Charles Xavier, a man who cares for 'gifted youngsters'. Here Xavier tries to access Logan's mind in a bid to help him remember his past.

But when Magneto strikes Wolverine and the rest of the X-Men are called into action to fight.

The end of the film sees him head off to Alkali Lake to discover his past.

X2: X2 hit the big screen in 2003 as Bryan Singer returned to the director's chair - it is the best of the X-Men movies so far.

Alkali Lake gives Logan no answers as there is nothing of the military that once stood their left.

On his return to the school it comes under attack from a man called William Stryker, someone who seems to know all about Wolverine and his past.

Stryker plans to kill the world's mutants and, once again, the X-Men are called into action. The team end up back at Alkali Lake as Stryker base is under the dam.

Wolverine's memory begins to return when he comes face to face with Stryker in an adamatium smelting room; this is where his body was filled with adamantium before he was able to escape.

Content with his answers he tries to help the rest of the team escape; but Jean is lost in the process.

X-Men: The Last Stand: X-Men: The Last Stand saw Brett Ratner take over the director's chair in what was the final film in the original X-Men trilogy.

Logan has remained at the school with the rest of the X-Men after getting the answers he needed in the second film.

But, he is struggling with his grief at the loss of Jean Grey. But trouble is brewing when she mysteriously returns. She is now the Phoenix and joins Magneto.

Magneto has brought together an army of mutants to stop the cure and fight against the human race.

Despite being outnumbered the X-Men, led by Wolverine and Storm, face off against Magneto to stop him.

During the battle Phoenix's power is out of control and it threatens to destroy everything and everyone. Because of his self-healing power only Wolverine can get close enough to kill her.

The movie closes with Storm taking over at the school, and Logan staying with them.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine: The first stand alone film for Wolverine came in 2009 when Jackman reprised the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

And this really was an origins story as it went right back to his childhood and the days before he joined the X-Men.

Logan's mutation is triggered as a young boy when he sees the murder of the man that he thought was his father. He escapes with his brother Victor and the next century sees them fight in ever war.

After surviving a firing squad Logan and Victor are recruited by William Stryker, who has put together a team of mutants.

After leaving the group he spends six years in Canada with Kayla Silverfox. But after finding dead - killed by Victor - he goes in search of Stryker for help.

We learn that Logan himself made the decision to have the adamantium skeleton. But when Stryker orders Logan's memory to be wiped, he escapes.

Logan is now on a mission to bring down Stryker and his organisation and, for a while, he and Victor team up to do just that.

During the fight he is shot in the head by Stryker, this is how he loses his memory.

The Wolverine: The Wolverine is the second stand alone film for this character, and hits the big screen this week.

The movie is set after events of X-Men: Last Stand and sees the much loved Japanese story arc from the comics brought to life.

Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed.

Both Jackman and Mangold have promised that The Wolverine is set to be different and darker than any X-Men movie that has gone before it. We are also set to see a more vulnerable Wolverine than in previous movies.

And we are going to be seeing Jackman return to this character next year with X-Men: Days of Future Past; a movie that will see him reunite with director Bryan Singer as well as Halle Berry, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan.

The Wolverine is released 25th July.
