Over the last week, we have been counting down some of the movie iconic film characters of the last twenty years; there really have been some wonderful creations in recent years.
The likes of Captain Jack Sparrow, Gollum, Tyler Durden and Forrest Gump have been fantastic characters and delivered some great movie moments.
Whilst putting these lists together there was one questions that really stood out... Why do all of these greatest and iconic roles belong to men?
There is no doubt that there have been some great characters and performances from actresses in recent years; Charlie Theron in Monster, Hilary Swank in Million-Dollar Baby and Natalie Portman in Black Swan are some stand out examples, but it seems that the 'stand the test of time characters' are all being written for the boys.
Throughout the seventies, eighties and early nineties characters such as Ellen Ripley, Princess Leia and Sarah Connor was kicking some ass and showing that they were just as strong as any man.
And when you think of iconic female film characters, there are three that immediately spring to mind.
But it is not about waving guns and being tough as the likes of Holly Golightly, Dorothy Gale and Scarlett O'Hara are the iconic characters from cinema's golden age.
Sadly, in the last twenty years, these roles have been few and far between; The Bride from Kill Bill, Lisbeth Salander from Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada are some that really do stand out.
The comic book movie is big at the box office right now, and yet we have not seen Marvel or D.C. Comics bring a female-led superhero movie to the big screen.
We are seeing more female led franchises such as The Twilight Saga, The Hunger Games and Prometheus all doing well at the box office.
We have also seen a tilt to more female-led comedy movies in recent year as Bridesmaids showed that there is an audience for this type of movie.
There is an army of super talented actresses working in movies at the moment - so many I wouldn't even know where to start - so why are they not being given the chance to create and deliver characters that will stand the test of time?
Don't get me wrong, there are some fantastic film roles for actresses at the moment, and I am looking forward to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Gravity, Blue Jasmine, Saving Mr. Banks and Philomena.
But, in twenty years time are these the roles that we are going to look back on and say were the greatest and most iconic of this time?
We need more Ellen Ripley's, Sarah O'Connor's and Clarice Starling's as we have the talent to bring such characters to life!!
