Sarah Gavron made her debut in with the big screen adaptation of Brick Lane and now she has turned her hand to documentary filmmaking for the compelling Village At The End of the World.
Village At The End of the World sees Gavron team up with her cinematographer husband David Katznelson as they travel to Niaqornat, North West Greenland to one of the remotest villages on the planet.
The movie follows this village community through their daily lives as we discover their history as well as the difficulties that they are facing because of climate and economic changes.
And we have some great new clips from the movie for you to check out before movie is released on Friday:
For Gavron and Katznelson this movie has been a labour of love as it has taken three years to make and took two years to film - and the pair were faced with some of the most challenging conditions.
So not only did they have the harsh cold to battle with but in the winter Niaqornat is in perpetual darkness - which were problems that the duo has to overcome.
With a population of just 59 hardy souls, Niaqornat, North West Greenland, is not just one of the remotest, coldest and most far-flung corner of the earth: it is the Village At The End Of The World!
Like all villages, Niaqornat has its supporters and detractors amongst the local populace. For some it is paradise, they can’t imagine living anywhere else, for others it’s the last place on earth they want to be.
For most Niaqornat is simply home. But the village is at risk - if the
population falls below 50 there is a danger that the entire village will be relocated to the nearest town.
Village At The End Of The World reflects the dilemmas of most small communities all over the world, but this one just happens to be in one of the remotest spots on earth.
The documentary genre has produced some real gems in recent years and Village At The End of the World is one of ht early 2013 projects that is not to be missed.
