About Time

About Time

There have been some wonderful films couples over the years that have filled us with joy as well as broken our hearts.

Inspired by Richard Curtis’s latest movie About Time (released in cinemas September 4), we’ve put together ten of our favourite romantic couples from the movies.

1. About Time - Tim and Mary

In Richard Curtis’s new film About Time, Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) learns at the age of 21 that the men in his family have the ability to travel through time. First on his agenda to make his world better... get a girlfriend.

The romantic comedy, which celebrates the everyday, family and unconditional love, see’s Mary (Rachael McAdams) and Tim become one of the top ten romantic onscreen couples this year.

2. Titanic - Jack and Rose

Classes collided when Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio), a poor artist, met Rose (Kate Winslet), a high woman of society engaged to be married on the first voyage of the ‘unsinkable’ Titanic.

Our hearts will always go on for Jack and Rose, who could quite possibly be, the most romantic onscreen couple of all time.

3. Romeo and Juliet - Leonardo DiCaprio and Clare Danes

Shakespeare’s iconic star-crossed lovers are played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Clare Danes in this tragic romance of Romeo and Juliet.

Why do they make the top ten? Not only does it have DiCaprio playing Romeo, but the pair brings the essence of the classic love story to a modern day audience.

4. The Notebook - Allie and Noah

The Notebook follows two young lovers, Allie and Noah, who enjoy a long summer of romance. When Allie’s parents disapprove of Noah’s poor background, the pair is separated and Allie is moved away.

Years later, Allie becomes engaged to a handsome young Soldier named Lon, but her love for Noah never truly disappears.

When Allie see’s in the paper, next to her own wedding announcement, a photo of Noah and the 200-year-old home her restored for her, the two become reunited. A story of the power of first love - we challenge anyone to not need tissues for this film.

5. Pretty Woman - Edward and Vivian

When Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) hires Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts), a prostitute he met on Hollywood Boulevard, as an escort for some social events who would have thought they would fall madly in love.

In this unlikely romantic story, the film even featured a genuine and comic moment between the actors which portrays the palpable chemistry between them. Look out for when Gere presented Roberts with a diamond necklace.

6. Sleepless in Seattle - Sam and Annie

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in Sleepless in Seattle make the top ten, why? Not only did they only ever manage a mere ‘Hello’ to one another, but they looked at each other, and just knew.

This romantic couple finally met atop the Empire State Building in one of the most endearing scenes in romantic movie history.

7. How To Lose a Guy in 10 days - Andie and Benjamin

In How To Lose a Guy in 10 days, the couple, unbeknown to each other, are in separate bets against each other. Benjamin, an advertising executive and ladies' man, is trying to win a big campaign and bets that he can make a woman fall in love with him in a mere 10 days.

Andie, on the other hand, is the "How To" girl for "Composure" magazine and is writing an article on "How to Lose a Guy in 10 days."

Not only were Andie (Kate Hudon) and Benjamin (Matthew McCoughy) a great romantic duo, they were also a great comedic pair. They were such a good team that they have since starred in another Rom-com together called, Fools Gold.

8. Notting Hill - Anna Scott and William Thacker

World’s collide in Notting Hill when William Thacker (Hugh Grant), a humble bookshop owner, meets the world famous actress Anna Scott (Julia Roberts).

After seeing her in his shop, spilling orange juice over her and not believing his luck when she ends up changing in his apartment nearby, the unlikely couple beat the odds and fall head over heels in love.

9. Dirty Dancing - Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman and Johnny Castle

Baby (Jennifer Grey) and Johnny (Patrick Swayze) make the top ten romantic couples for two reasons. One, they gave us the iconic lift to the song I Had the Time of My Life and two, showed us that a summer romance can mean true love.

10. Casablanca - Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman

When Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman played Rick Blaine and Isla Lund in Casablanca, they brought to life the unforgettable romance that former flames can hold in this war time movie. Separated by war, the couple survive and overcome the temptations of lust and desire to be true to one another.
