Captain Phillips

Captain Phillips

The 57th BFI London Film Festival is now less than a month away, and it is set to be one of the most exciting festivals ever.

The line-up for the festival was revealed earlier this wee and there are some terrific films that will be heading our way.

There are a whole host of potential Oscar contenders as well as great British films that will be lighting up the big screen.

We take a look at the movies that will be playing at London Film Festival that we are the most excited about.

- Captain Phillips

Captain Phillips sees Paul Greengrass return to the director's chair, as he is given the honour of opening the festival.

Captain Phillips is the first film for Greengrass since Green Zone, as he teams up with Oscar winner Tom Hanks for the first time.

The movie tells the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.

We already know how much the Academy loves a biopic performance, could we see Hanks in contention at the beginning of next year?

- Inside Llewyn Davis

Joel & Ethan Coen have been Oscar favourites in the past, and now they are back with their new film Inside Llewyn Davis; a movie that has already been going down well on the festival circuit.

Guitar in tow, huddled against the unforgiving New York winter, he is struggling to make it as a musician against seemingly insurmountable obstacles... some of them of his own making.

This is a movie that could really put actor Oscar Isaac on the map, as he takes on the central role in the film.

He is joined by Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, Garrett Hedlund and singer turned actor Justin Timberlake.

- 12 Years A Slave

Steve McQueen has made quite a name for himself in recent years with movies such as Hunger and Shame. And now he is back with this third feature film 12 Years A Slave.

The movie is based on the true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man who is kidnapped and sold into slavery.

There is already a lot of hype surrounding this film so don't be surprised to see it doing battle at all the big awards ceremonies at the beginning of next year.

A terrific cast has been assembled for the film as Chiwetel Ejiofor, Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender and Benedict Cumberbatch are all on board.

This looks set to be one of the stand out films of the festival - it is a shame it won't be hitting the big screen until January.

- Gravity

Gravity is already a movie that has fans, critics and other directors heaping praise on it.

It has been the highlight of the festival circuit so far this autumn as it was debuted in Venice.

I am a big fan of both George Clooney and Sandra Bullock and I am excited to see them share the big screen for the first time. Moreover their central performances are key to this film as they are the only people on the cast list.

James Cameron has already called it the best space movie ever made, and that has made me even more excited to check this film out.

Gravity promises to be the toast of the London Film Festival and could well be a major Oscar player.

- Labor Day

Kate Winslet is one of the best actresses of her generation, and she will be back on the big screen in her latest film Labor Day.

The movie also marks the return of Jason Reitman to the director's chair in what will be his first film since Young Adult.

But he will move away from comedy with this project as he tackles dram by adapting Joyce Maynard's novel.

The film follows a single mother and her son who offer a wounded made a ride. But he is an escaped convict and they are both in danger.

Josh Brolin, Tobey Maguire, James Van Der Beek and Clark Gregg are all also on board the film.

- The Invisible Woman

Ralph Fiennes make his directorial debut with Coriolanus back in 2012 and now he is set to return with The Invisible Woman.

The movie is an adaptation of the book by Claire Tomalin and will see Fiennes lead the cast as well as be in the director's chair.

Fiennes will take on the role of Charles Dickens and the movie will follow him as he meets a younger woman, who becomes his lover until his death.

Felicity Jones, Michelle Fairley, Kristen Scott Thomas and Tom Hollander make up a very impressive cast list.

Fiennes showed that he had a flair for directing with is debut and I can't wait to see his latest project.

- Philomena

Another film that has been whipping up a storm on the festival circuit is Philomena, and I am delighted to say that it is coming to the London Film Festival.

The movie marks the return of Judi Dench as she takes on the role of Philomena Lee; a woman who searches for her the son she gave up in the fifties.

Philomena is based on the novel by Martin Sixsmith; who is played by Steve Coogan in the film. Coogan has also penned the screenplay for the movie.

And as if that wasn't exciting enough, the film also sees the fantastic Stephen Frears return to the director's chair.

Philomena looks set to be one of the most powerful and emotional films at the festival.

The BFI London Film Festival will run from 9th - 20th October.
