Prisoners

Prisoners

The Toronto Film Festival has just got underway, and it promises to be one of the most successful ever as a fantastic line-up of movies has been brought together.

This is the time of year where we see some of the potential Oscar contenders raise their head; and it seems that we are going to be seeing some truly fantastic films battling it out at the beginning of next year.

As we take a look at the top six movies that we are excited to see in the Toronto Film Festival line-up.

- Prisoners

Prisoners was screened at Venice Film Festival last weekend, and was met by rave reviews from the critics.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal this was a movie that I was already looking forward to, but it looks like it is going to be a real cracker.

Jackman takes on the role of a father whose daughter has been abducted. He must face the decision whether or not to turn vigilante to find her. While Gyllenhaal plays the cop on the hunt for the kidnapper.

A stunning cast has been assembled as Viola Davis, Maria Bellow, Terrence Howard and Melissa Leo are all also on board.

There is already talk of Oscar nominations for both Jackman and Gyllenhaal, and that will only increase as we head towards Christmas.

- 12 Years A Slave

12 Years A Slave may not be hitting the big screen until the beginning of next year, but it is already a project that is causing a lot of excitement.

And that comes as no surprise as the film sees the fantastic Steve McQueen return to the director's chair; he has already brought us Hunger and Shame.

The film will tell the true story of Solomon Northup; a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery.

Chiwetel Ejiofor will take on the central role, while Benedict Cumberbatch, Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender are all also on board. This will be the third collaboration between McQueen and Fassbender; it looks like it is going to be a vicious and fantastic performance from the actor.

McQueen has a knack of making character driven movies, and 12 Years A Slave looks set to continue that fine tradition.

- Gravity

To say that Gravity was met well when it debuted at the Venice Film Festival is a bit of an understatement; it really was a mammoth hit.

Director James Cameron has called it the best space movie that has ever been made - which is praise indeed.

The film sees Alfonso Cuarón back in the director's chair, while Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are the only two actors on the cast list.

Gravity follows Dr Ryan Stone and matt Kowalsky as they are left drifting in space after an accident.

There has been major talk of Gravity being a serious Oscar contender for quite some time now - that has only increased since it debuted last week.

Gravity is a movie that I have personally been excited about for some time as it looks set to be a sci-fi gem.

- Dallas Buyers Club

Matthew McConaughey is an actor who have really turned his career around in recent years; he is not longer the good looking guy that gets his shirt off in every movie that he does.

With roles such as Magic Mike and Killer Joe in recent years he has show what he is all about as an actor.

Dallas Buyers Club will only cement him as a major force as he is set to play an Aids sufferer with this new project; he has lost a whopping 38 pounds for this role.

Jean-Marc Vallée is back in the director's chair, while Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner are all also on board.

This could well be THE role of McConaughey's career to far and I can't wait to see his performance in this film.

- Dom Hemingway

Jude Law is set to return to the big screen this autumn with his new film Dom Hemingway.

The British black comedy is directed and written by Richard Shepard; he is making his return to feature film for the first time since The Hunting Party back in 2007.

Jude Law will take on the title role in the film, while Richard E. Grant, Demian Bichir and Emilia Clarke are all also on board.

The film follows Dom Hemingway as he returns to the streets of London to collect what he is owed after doing twelve years in jail for keeping his mouth shut.

There are some great British films doing the rounds on the festival circuit at the moment, and Dom Hemingway is promising to be one of the best.

- The Fifth Estate

Benedict Cumberbatch is one of the most in demand actors at the moment as he has a whole host of projects on the horizon.

The Fifth Estate is one of them and will see the actor take on the role of Julian Assange.

The film sees the actor team up with director Bill Condon for the first time, while Daniel Bruhl, Laura Linney, Stanley Tucci and Anthony Mackie are all also on board.

The Fifth Estate traces the early days of WikiLeaks, culminating in the release of a series of controversial and history changing information leaks.
