The Lone Ranger

The Lone Ranger

There are a whole host of fantastic films on the horizon between now and the end of the year; seriously, film fans are going to be spoilt for choice.

But it is not the films that we are focusing on today but the characters that will appear in them.

We take a look at the top six characters that we are super excited to see in the films that are coming up between now and the end of the year.

- Tonto - The Lone Ranger

I know that The Lone Ranger has not exactly been receiving glowing reviews, but that doesn't mean that we are not looking forward to seeing Johnny Depp back on the big screen.

This Oscar nominated actor is famed for taking on the slightly quirky and off the wall roles... it seems that Tonto will see him continue that fine tradition.

Depp has Native American ancestry and says that he based the character of Tonto on his grandmother.

The movie will see Tonto recount the tales of his partnership with The Lone Ranger and how they battled for justice.

The Lone Ranger looks set to see Depp at his eccentric best - but it looks like there is a big of action hero thrown in as well.

The Lone Ranger is released 9th August.

- Riddick - Riddick

It has been nearly a decade since we have seen Richard B. Riddick on the big screen - yes it really was back in 2004.

But this September we see Vin Diesel reprise this role in Riddick: the third film in the franchise.

If you haven't seen the trailer yet then I should tell you that Riddick is at him mean and moody best as mercenaries are on his tail and he has to battle an alien race of predators.

Riddick is the reluctant hero, the murdering villain that we all cannot help but like. Diesel plays him in such a way that keeps the audience on his side.

With his back against the wall Riddick is always at his best, and most deadly, and it looks like the body count is going to be pretty big.

Riddick is released 4th September.

- Malekith - Thor: The Dark World

Thor: The Dark World is a film that looks set to be another Marvel triumph as we return to Asgard for the first time since 2011.

And while it is great to see Chris Hemsworth and co back, it is the new villain that I am really looking forward to.

That new villain is Malekith, and he will be brought to life by the fantastic Christopher Eccleston.

Malekith is the leader of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim and looks set to cause chaos for Thor.

Eccleston is a great actor and it is exciting to see him take on this sort of blockbuster role.

We have seen in other roles that Eccleston can bring a darkness and a menace to his performance that will be perfect for this character.

Thor: The Dark World is released 30th October.

- Finnick Odair - The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The Hunger Games was one of the best and most successful films of 2012, and the sequel is already one of the most talked about films of 2013.

Catching Fire is set to see Katniss Everdeen return to the arena as she will take part in the Quarter Quell.

And while we are excited to Katniss back, it is Finnick Odair that we are really keen to see in the film.

Finnick is an interesting and complex character and a major player in the second and third novels - we are interested to see how he is depicted on the big screen.

Sam Claflin is set to take on the role as Finnick is thrust into the Quarter Quell to do battle with Katniss... but it doesn't quite work out that way.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is released 21st November.

- Carrie - Carrie

Horror fans have been waiting quite some time for the remake of Carrie as it got pushed back to November earlier this year.

The movie is a remake of the Stephen King classic; a film that was released back in 1977 but it still as loved today.

Chloe Moretz will take over the title role in the Kimberly Peirce directed film, and I can't wait to see what sort of performance this young actress will deliver.

Carrie is a sheltered girl who unleashes her newly developed telekinetic powers when she is pushed too far by her peers.

Carrie is set to be THE horror movie to see this autumn and I can't wait to see what Moretz and director Peirce deliver.

Carrie is released 29th November.

- Smaug: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

All Lord of the Rings fans were thrilled last Christmas when we were taken back to Middle Earth for the first time in almost a decade with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

This December we were heading back for the latest instalment of Bilbo Baggins and the dwarves' quest to reclaim their mountain in The Desolation of Smaug.

And it is the character of Smaug that we are most excited to see; we have been catching glimpses here and there of the dragon.

Benedict Cumberbatch is set to bring this character to life, and he is set to be the heart and soul of the second film.

Peter Jackson's motion capture and CGI work has always been of the highest order, and I fully expect that tradition to continue.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is released 13th December.
