Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman is one of the biggest names in Hollywood, and he is back on
the big screen this week with The Wolverine.

It was back in 2000 when he took on this role for the very first time; it is the part that has made him a global star.

We take a look back over his career and countdown his five best roles so far...

1. Les Miserables

It was earlier this year when he gave the performance of his career, as he took on the role of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables.

Jackman has a background in theatre and so a musical film really was right up his street.

The film saw him team up with director Tom Hooper, while Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne joined him on the cast list.

It was a knockout performance from Jackman as he showed off his singing prowess as well as his acting skills.

It was a powerful and moving performance from the actor and resulted in his receiving his first Best Actor Oscar nomination.

2. The Prestige

It was back in 2006 that The PRestige hit the big screen, and yet it remains one of the best magic film ever.

Christopher Nolan was in the director's chair while Jackman and Christian Bale played two rival magicians. The movie followed them as they both attempted to perform the ultimate illusion; trying to out do one another in the process.

The Prestige is a superb thriller from start to finish with plenty of twists and turns along the way.

Nothing is quite what it seems as Nolan and co explore the dark side of competition and obsession.

Jackman and Bale both giving fascinating and fantastic performances as they put their friendship aside for success.

3. X2

X2 celebrated it's tenth anniversary earlier this year, and it remains the best X-Men movie to hit the big screen.

It came three years after X-Men and saw Bryan Singer back in the director's chair.

Jackman reprise the role of Wolverine in a movie that saw his story the core of the movie. Wolverine still has no memory of his past, but when a man who knows him suddenly appears he could be a step closer to finding out what happened to him.

X2 was bigger and more ambitious that its predecessor as it mixes fantastic set pieces with some great character development.

X2 was a commercial and critical hit and really did set up the franchise for big things; sadly it didn't quite work out as Singer didn't return for X-Men: The Last Stand.

4. The Fountain

The Fountain is one of those movies that you either like or don't like as Jackman teamed up with director Darren Aronofsky and Rachel Weisz in 2007.

The movie is set over a thousand years and followed three parallel stories that tackled life, death and spirituality.

It is a beautiful and stunning looking film and yet it is one that will you leave you scratching your head from time to time.

Jackman and Weisz make a great team as their love story is told over and over again in different forms.

The Fountain is a marmite movie; you either love it or you hat it.

5. X-Men

X-Men and the role of Wolverine is the part that made Jackman a star when it was released back in 2000.

X-Men was the first American role for the actor and saw him team up with Halle Berry, Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart.

It was a movie that really did set all of the groundwork for the characters and the battle between mutants and man.

But it was a film that had brains as well as brawn as Singer mixed some great action moments with some fascinating characters.

The movie was a box office hit that not only launched the X-Men franchise but also Jackman's career.

Other Hugh Jackman movies that are worth checking out include The Fountain, Australia, Real Steel and Kate & Leopold.

The Wolverine is released 25th July.
