2015 may have been a mixed bag when it comes to how great the horror movies have been, but that stopped there being an array of terrific poster grabbing our attention.

Sinister 2

Sinister 2

There is something about a horror movie poster... it has to have a certain atmosphere to it to send a shiver down your spine before you have even thought about going to see the film.

Sinister 2 hits the big screen this week and to celebrate we take a look at some of the best horror movie artwork to be unveiled so far this year.

- Poltergeist

Poltergeist

The thing the horror genre does so well is play on common fears... and there is nothing more common that the fear of clowns/clown-looking dolls.

I have to say, clowns don't particularly bother me as a rule but this clown - which is starring directly down the lens of the camera - really is a very creepy image and perfect for a horror movie poster. If you don't like clowns, Poltergeist could well be one to miss as it is a character that features very heavily in the film.

The poster itself was designed by ARSONAL and rams home the doll fear that many people have. A truly skin-crawling image.

- A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is one of the most talked about and acclaimed horror movies of the year - and unlike anything else that you will see in 2015.

Like the film, the poster for A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is also unique. This is a stylish, striking, art deco design that really is one of the standout pieces of horror movie artwork so far this year.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, which is written and directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, looks set to go on to be a cult classic and this poster looks set to do the same.

- The Gallows

The Gallows

The Gallows hit the big screen back in July and followed a group of students who try to resurrect a play that led to an accident and death twenty years earlier. The theatrical nature of the film is captured in the poster by using fantastic contrasting colours of light and dark.

Concept Arts were behind the design of the poster for the film, and have created a piece of artwork that really is packed with atmosphere and an element of danger. And yet, it gives nothing about the story/plot away and so there is also an element of mystery to this poster.

- Crimson Peak

Crimson Peak

Crimson Peak is one of the 2015 horror movies that I am looking forward to the most as it marks the return of Guillermo del Toro to the director's chair - no one does gothic horror like del Toro.

While we have been treated to an array of great posters for the film, it is the Mondo artwork that I love the most. The posters made an appearance at Comic Con earlier this summer and this one is designed by Guy Davis.

It captures the gothic feel that del Toro is so great at and it really is a rather creepy and yet intriguing poster that hints at both danger and mystery.

- The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death

The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death

Ok, so The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death didn't quite live up the success of the first film and wasn't a patch on it when it came to jumps and scares. However, the film did boast some really great posters at the beginning of the year.

The Woman in Black is a character that looms large over this film, and this poster really does capture that theme incredibly well. There is a dark and quite sinister feel to this poster that really does send a shiver down your spine.

Sinister 2 is released 21st August.
