Alfred Hitchcock remains one of the greatest and influential filmmakers of all time, and his movies are still loved by generations of film fans.
This week sees To Catch A Thief re-released on the big screen, which will allow fans to enjoy this master once again, while others will be coming to Hitchcock’s work for the very first time.
To celebrate the release of To Catch A Thief, we are going to take a look at some of Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest work… we may as well start with To Catch A Thief.
To Catch A Thief was released back in 1955, and was to be Hitchcock’s final film with Grace Kelly, as she starred alongside Cary Grant.
The movie is loosely based on the novel of the same name by David Dodge, and follows a reformed jewel thief who is suspected of returning to his former occupation, he must ferret out the real thief in order to prove his innocence.
To Catch A Thief is perhaps one of Hitchcock’s lightest movies, and yet that does not stop it being a vintage piece of work from the filmmaker.
This is a classic cat and mouse tale that is told with humour, suspense, style and flair, with both Grant and Kelly on top form.
Grant has always made a terrific leading man, and yet with Hitchcock he really did thrive: To Catch A Thief was their third collaboration together, after Notorious and Suspicion. Hitchcock/Grant remains one of the great director/actor collaborations of all time.
Kelly was another star who really did enjoy success when working with Hitchcock, and while there is a frostiness to her character at time in To Catch A Thief, that doesn’t stop her from being totally charming. Kelly & Grant together make a killer team and they pair really do sizzle.
Hitchcock had a knack of mixing suspense and romance, but this time it was the latter that really was at the forefront. Ok, so this may not be the most suspenseful and edge of your seat film that Hitchcock ever made, but it is one that you just have to see.
To Catch A Thief is exciting, witty, and sexy and is driven forward by the pairing of Grant and Kelly. This is one of those Hitchcock films that you really can kick back and enjoy.
It is great to see this film back on the big screen for a new generation to enjoy. If you are coming to Hitchcock’s work for the first time, this is a good a place as any to start - however, there are some darker and more suspenseful works in his back catalogue.
To Catch A Thief is re-released on 8th August.
