They always say that behind every brave man there has to be a strong woman and in the superhero movie that is absolutely the case.
These women are not damsels in distress they are strong, powerful and clever women in their own right than are more that a match for the world saving men.
Pepper Potts - Iron Man
This week we see Iron Man return to the big screen and Gwyneth Paltrow reprises the role of Pepper Potts.
And Pepper is a character who has gone on a major transformation throughout the franchise; from Tony Stark's personal assistant to the CEO of Stark Industries.
With this third movie we see Pepper really at ease with her role as CEO and she has become a powerful and respected figure in the business world.
She is more on a par with Tony than ever before and over the three movie we have seen their romance blossom.
And with this third instalment we are going to see her kick ass like never before.
Jane Foster - Thor
We have only had the chance to see Jane Foster in action once as Natalie Portman brought her to the big screen in Thor in 2011.
Jane Foster is a character who has under gone a major chance from comics to big screen; going from a nurse to an astrophysicist.
As a serious scientist Foster is a woman who is smart and strong and knows her own mind - she is not afraid to ask questions and consider theories that would be overlooked by others.
In the first movie we see her win Thor's heart but the two are separated when the Bifrost Bridge is destroyed.
Filming is completed on the second stand alone Thor movie -which will be released later this year - and it will be exciting to see this character and relationship grow further.
Peggy Carter - Captain America
Hayley Atwell took on the role for the first time when Captain America: The First Avenger was released back in 2011.
Carter is an officer with the Strategic Scientific Reserve and is a woman who is ready for the fight.
She is not a character that needs to be rescued and while men dominate the world that she works in she is more than a match for them.
We see her relationship with Steve Rogers develop throughout The First Avenger but any hope of a future together are dashed when he crashes the aircraft he is flying and is lost for seventy years.
Atwell will be making an appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier - which is out next year.
Betty Ross - The Hulk
Betty Ross is another super smart woman as she is a cellular biologist and was working with Bruce Banner when he had his 'accident'.
Played by both Liv Tyler and Jennifer Connelly in recent years Betty has had to find a way to carry on with her life as Bruce disappeared after the accident.
In The Incredible Hulk we see Banner pursued by the military lead by Betty's father - putting s strain on the father/daughter relationship.
Despite learning the truth about Banner and what he has become Betty stands by him understand what is happening to him.
Lois Lane - Superman
We have seen many interpretations of Lois Lane over the years from hard headed journalist to mother in the last bit screen outing for this character.
But while Lois Lane may have changed over the years she has been the main love interest for Superman during all of that time.
But one thing that Lois Lane has always been is ballsy and committed to a story - and that is exactly what we are going to see with Man of Steel.
Oscar nominee Amy Adams is taking over the role in the Zack Snyder directed movie and, once again, she is a reported for the Daily Planet newspaper.
The Superman story is set to be rebooted with this movie and Lois Lane will once again be Superman's love interest.
Other strong women behind the superheroes include Rachel Dawes (played by Katie Holmes and Maggie Gyllenhaal in the Batman franchise) Liz Sherman (played by Selma Blair in Hellboy) and Carol Ferris (played by Blake Lively in Green Lantern).
Iron Man 3 is released 25th April.
