The Revenant was the big winner at last night's Golden Globe awards as it scooped three gongs - including Best Motion Picture Drama.
The Revenant saw off tough competition from Mad Max: Fury Road, Carol, Room, and Spotlight to take home the night's major prize. Leonardo DiCaprio and Alejandro González Iñárritu were also honoured as they scooped Best Actor and Best Director for their work on the film.
DiCaprio was the hot favourite to scoop the award and looks set to perhaps go on to win the first Best Actor Oscar of his career. While Bryan Cranston, Michael Fassbender, Eddie Redmayne, and Will Smith were also in the Best Actor mix, there was only ever going to be one winner last night.
Iñárritu missed out on Best Director twelve months ago for The Birdman - Richard Linklater won for Boyhood - but he finally enjoyed Golden Globe glory as he saw off Todd Haynes (Carol), Tom McCarthy (Spotlight), George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road), and Ridley Scott (The Martian) for Best Director.
It was also a great night for The Martian and Steve Jobs as they both scooped two gongs each. The Martian - which has been receiving a lot of award love in recent weeks - went home with best Motion Picture. Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Matt Damon's central performance.
Kate Winslet tasted Golden Globe success once again as she triumphed in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in biopic Steve Jobs. The Best Supporting Actress category was a tough one as Jane Fonda (Youth), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Hateful Eight), Helen Mirren (Trumbo), and Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) were also in the mix. Aaron Sorkin won the second gong for the film, as he picked up the Best Original Screenplay award.
The Best Actress award was one of the toughest to call as Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn), Cate Blanchett (Carol), Rooney Mara (Carol), Brie Larson (Room) and Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) were all recognised for their fantastic work. However, it was breakthrough star Brie Larson who triumphed last night for Room, which is an adaptation of the book of the same name by Emma Donoghue.
Sylvester Stallone won his first ever Golden Globe as he returned to the role of Rocky Balboa in new boxing film Creed. He was nominated back in 1977 for Best Actor and Best Screenplay, but last night was his first win.
There was also success of the critically acclaimed Inside Out and Son of Saul as they won Best Animated Feature and Best Foreign Language Film.
The race for the 2016 Oscars is well and truly on and we could see many of last night's winners triumph on the biggest night on the movie calendar. It is going to be an interesting and very exciting race.
