The BFG

The BFG

Director: Steven Spielberg

Rating: 3.5/5

It is always exciting when s Steven Spielberg movie hits the big screen as he has delivered some wonderful movies over the years. He is back with a new adaptation of The BFG, which sees him jump from Cold War drama of Bridge of Spies to a children's literary classic.

The BFG sees Spielberg reunite with screenwriter Melissa Mathison, who wrote the wonderful script for E.T.

The BFG tells the extraordinary tale of a young girl named Sophie (Barnhill) and the Big Friendly Giant (Rylance) who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country. Together they embark on a marvellous and buckswashling adventure filled with snozzcumbers, dream jars, frobscottle and even the Queen!

The mismatched pair form an unlikely friendship that will inspire enormous bravery in the BFG and give Sophie a taste of the family she dreams of.

This is the first ever live-action adaptation of Roald Dahl's most famous book... and Spielberg has done a wonderful job.

The BFG is a technical marvel that looks fantastic and truly takes audiences on an exciting adventure to a breathtaking new world. Visually, this movie really is a treat - I would expect nothing less from Mr. Spielberg.

The use of motion capture has brought the character of the BFG alive like never before. Every aspect of that performance belongs to Mark Rylance; from the shy smile to the twinkle in his eye.

Rylance has seen his star rocket in the last year or so - winning a Best Supporting Oscar at the beginning of 2016 - and he delivers another charming and touching central performance.

Rylance is becoming Spielberg's go-to man and they really do make a superb filmmaking team. I am already looking forward to their next collaboration, which is an adaptation of Ready Player One.

However, it is not all about Rylance as Sophie Barnhill also delivers a great performance. Barnhill takes on the role of Sophie and is a young actress that you really do need to keep an eye on going forward.

It is an enchanting performance from the young star; she captures the innocence, the heart, the strength, and the determination of this fantastic heroine.

The BFG is not a movie without fault as it does take a little while for the story to get going... but once it does, it is a great adventure. There is something here for all the family to enjoy and it really is a lot of fun.

The BFG is out now.
