Spotlight was the toast of the Oscars last night as the hard-hitting journalism movie scooped Best Picture.
It looked set to be a two-horse race between Spotlight and The Revenant, which had won the Golden Globe and the Bafta in recent weeks. But Spotlight is the kind of movie that the Academy loves and it picked up the biggest award of the night.
It was one of two Oscars for the film, as Josh Singer & Tom McCarthy also triumphed for Best Original Screenplay.
However, it was Mad Max: Fury Road that was the most successful, picking up six awards for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Makeup, Best Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
The Academy sprung no surprises in the Best Actor category as red-hot favourite Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar for his performance in The Revenant. DiCaprio has won every major award in recent weeks and this was the sixth Oscar nomination of his career.
Brie Larson was another favourite going into last night's ceremony and she saw off strong competition from Cate Blanchett (Carol), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn), Charlotte Rampling (45 Years), and Jennifer Lawrence (Joy) to win her first Best Actress Oscar for Room.
The supporting actor categories were the most exciting as Sylvester Stallone & Mark Rylance and Alicia Vikander & Kate Winslet went head to head.
Mark Rylance picked up the Best Supporting Actor gong for his performance in Bridge of Spies - the first Oscar win of his career. While Vikander was another first-time winner as she picked up Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Danish Girl. Both Bridge of Spies and The Danish Girl failed to pick up any other awards last night.
Alejandro G Inarritu made it two Best Director wins on the trot as he was recognised once again for his work on The Revenant; he won the same award twelve months ago for Birdman.
There were no surprises in the Best Animated Feature and Best Documentary categories, as Inside Out and Amy - who were both hotly tipped to win - triumphed.
Ex Machina perhaps sprung the biggest surprise of the night as it saw off the challenge from Star Wars: The Force Awakens to win Best Visual Effects.
This was one of two Oscar nominations for the critically acclaimed sci-fi film; the other came in the Best Original Screenplay category.
