Having already taken a look at some of the biggest movies set to be released this year, we're now delving into rumours that have been swirling about a number of them for some time. Exactly whether or not any of these will come to pass remains to be seen, but the theories and discussion conjured up are certainly worth exploring!
In saying that, remember to take each of these with a pinch of salt. They're unconfirmed for a reason!
Is Hayley Atwell going to make a surprise appearance in Captain Marvel?
After being introduced all the way back in 2011 through Marvel's Captain America: The First Avenger, Hayley Atwell's Agent Peggy Carter became a firm fan-favourite. She went on to secure her own solo TV series and appeared in a number of other Marvel Cinematic Universe flicks, but eventually the show was canned and Atwell's MCU appearances dwindled, before coming to an end entirely.
Now however, the chance to bring her back is bigger than ever before. New film Captain Marvel, set for release in March 2019, takes place in 1995, meaning Agent Carter will be alive and well during the same period.
Atwell hasn't been listed in any of the cast announcements for Captain Marvel, but that doesn't mean those behind-the-scenes aren't cooking up a surprise appearance.
Marvel Studios co-president Louis D'Esposito helped fuel the rumours when he posted the above picture to his social media, saying Atwell had visited in July 2017.
This was just a few months before shooting for the action adventure flick began, so could Atwell have been discussing the terms of her return? We certainly hope so! This one is going to be a 'wait and see' rumour. All we know for sure is that millions will be disappointed if Agent Carter doesn't make an appearance.
Charles Dance is Warner Bros's MonsterVerse's mega-villain
Charles Dance's role in Warner Bros's MonsterVerse has been shrouded in secrecy ever since it was announced, so much so that we don't even know the name of the character he'll be playing.
Some say it's possible he could be stepping into the role of an older version of Tom Hiddleston's character Captain James Conrad from Kong: Skull Island; especially since director Michael Dougherty confirmed a character from that film would be returning and only Dance's role hasn't yet been officially named.
Even though Captain Conrad didn't seem the type to have a major change of heart and turn villain however, some believe the 40 years we haven't seen between the Skull Island events and those that'll take place in Godzilla: King of the Monsters may have seen him do exactly that.
Some however still believe that he'll be playing a new character entirely; and one that will cause chaos not only during King of the Monsters, but for the foreseeable future of the MonsterVerse. It may even be that we don't see Dance at all until the post-credits scene, at which point his motives and agenda will be made clear.
Whatever the case may be, Dance is one of the most capable actors of taking on a villainous role. Fans of Game of Thrones will know him for his performance as Tywin Lannister; one of the most easily-hated baddies the show offered up. However he appears, it's going to be a treat for audiences.
A Superman cameo in Shazam?
Henry Cavill owes the Worlds of DC cinematic universe one final appearance before his contractual obligations have been filled, and rumours suggest Warner Bros. will be testing the waters for a contract renewal by bringing the actor into Shazam! via a small cameo role as the Man of Steel.
In the final few months of 2018, Variety reported that Warner Bros. had decided not to move forward with any further solo Superman films featuring Cavill, which came as a huge blow to his fans. The article also claimed that Ben Affleck wouldn't be playing the Dark Knight in any future solo Batman flicks.
Whether or not WB are looking to do an entire refresh of their universe remains to be seen, but it would be a shame to not see Cavill at all in the franchise's future. He has played an important and integral part to the once-named DC Extended Universe, and to ignore that completely would be a major mistake.
We'll just leave this tweet right here...
Elsa may have a girlfriend in Frozen 2
Ever since the first Frozen film hit cinemas, some fans wondered whether Let It Go was also an anthem for Elsa's 'coming out'. Nothing was ever confirmed or denied by Disney, but since that point suggestions she could make a return in this year's Frozen sequel with a girlfriend have been bubbling under the surface.
A report from Revenge Of The Fans came in August 2018 that stated those working on Frozen 2 were planning on introducing a female love interest for Elsa, and when openly-bisexual actress Evan Rachel Wood was announced as joining the cast, many took this as a confirmation.
Disney have been talking the talk about inclusivity and equality for some time now, so to see them come through with something like this would be magical. They just have to ensure they don't make it a novelty casting that's pointed out at every opportunity, but instead a natural path for Elsa.
Matt Smith could play a Young Palpatine in Star Wars: Episode IX
Ever since it was revealed Matt Smith would be joining the cast of Star Wars: Episode IX, details surrounding his involvement have been kept to a minimum. Many believe that this is because he'll be bringing back the role of Palpatine to the new trilogy, but of course as a younger version of the character.
Exactly how this would work and play into the story remains to be seen, but during a recent episode of The Weekly Planet Podcast, the host claimed to have heard information from an anonymous source confirming that a youthful Palpatine would indeed be making an impact in Episode IX.
Is Joaquin Phoenix's Joker related to Batman?
Joaquin Phoenix's take on the Joker already looks to be one of the most exciting cinematic moments of 2019, but the rumour surrounding his relationship with Bruce Wayne, aka Batman has raised a few eyebrows.
This past summer, That Hashtag Show got their hands on exclusive details surrounding the characters we'll see play a part in Joker, including that of Frances Conroy's character Penny. She's Arthur Fleck's (Joker's) mother, and someone who is described as being "obsessed with her former employer"; none other than Thomas Wayne.
If that obsession is born out of a fling with Thomas, could Fleck and Wayne actually be related? It would certainly be an interesting spin on the Joker/Batman dynamic!
