Sally Hawkins

Sally Hawkins

Sally Hawkins has been making a splash on the big screen over the last few years and she is back this week with her new film Blue Jasmine.

Blue Jasmine will see the Golden Globe winning actress team up with Cate Blanchett and director Woody Allen for the first time in a movie that is already being tipped for big things come the awards season.

Ever since she made her breakthrough with Happy-Go-Lucky back in 2008 - the role for which she won her Golden Globe - she has gone on to appear in the likes of Never Let Me Go, Made In Dagenham and Great Expectations.

Blue Jasmine will see the British actress play the sister of Cate Blanchett’s title character Jasmine; a woman who finds herself in a midlife crisis. Jasmine turns to her sister for support and a place to live - but she soon starts meddling in her relationship.

Blue Jasmine has been winning over critics and will kick off a busy period for the actress as she takes on a wide variation of roles.

She has already completed work on new British drama X Plus Y: a film that would see her team up with director Morgan Matthew as he makes his fiction feature film directorial debut.

A fantastic cast has been assembled for the film as Asa Butterfield, Eddie Marsan and Rafe Spall are all on board.

Hawkins will play the mother of teenage maths prodigy Nathan (Butterfield), a young boy who struggles with people but find comfort in numbers. But when Nathan heads to Taiwan he faces an unexpected challenge; feelings he cannot understand for Zhang Mei (Jo Yang).

Hawkins will also switch drama for the big budget blockbuster next year as she will be part of the all star cast of Godzilla.

Godzilla is set to be the biggest film of Hawkins’ career to date as director Gareth Edwards puts his spin on this well known tale.

This is just the second directorial outing for Edwards after he made his debut with the fantastic Monsters back in 2010.

Hawkins is part of an impressive ensemble cast that includes Aaron Taylor Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Ken Watanabe and David Strathairn; it is one of the best casts of 2014.

This is not the type of movie that we are use to seeing Hawkins in and it is fantastic that she gets the chance to be part of what will be a huge blockbuster.

2014 is also going to see a Paddington Bear movie hit the big screen that Hawkins will also be a part of. Paddington is a big screen adaptation of the Michael Bond books and sees Paul King in the director’s chair.

Hawkins will take on the role of Mary Brown in the movie, while Nicole Kidman, Julie Walters and Jim Broadbent are all on board. Oscar winner Colin Firth will voice the character of Paddington.

Hawkins is one of the most exciting British acting talents and she is set to have a very successful 2014 with some great projects on the horizon.

But first we are going to enjoy another great performance from her in Blue Jasmine; a movie that is set to raise her star even further.

Blue Jasmine is released 27th September.
