When I went into R.I.P.D. I was expecting very much, to tell you the truth I was expecting it to be bloody awful… and it didn’t disappoint.
Yes, R.I.P.D. is a movie that is to be avoided at all costs as it really is ninety six minutes of your life that you will NEVER get back - even the lovely Ryan Reynolds on the big screen is not enough to dull the pain.
R.I.P.D. as two cops dispatched by the otherworldly Rest In Peace Department to protect and serve the living from an increasingly destructive array of souls who refuse to move peacefully to the other side.
The recently deceased Nick Walker (Reynolds) finds himself partnered up with Roy Pulsifer (Bridges) and together they must stop a plot that could life on earth as we know it.
R.I.P.D. is so terrible it really is hard to know where to begin. One thing I will say is a talented cast is totally wasted; they really do do the best with the very little that they have to go on.
This movie is unoriginal beyond belief; they have basically taken the plot of Men In Black and switched aliens for dead monsters. And don’t even get me started on how predictable it is going to be.
Nick and Roy meet and immediately hate each other - not very original. But guess what? As the movie progresses they begin to work as a team. Obviously by the end of the film they make an excellent team. Oh yes and Nick manages to get the closer with the wife that he left behind after his death. Seriously, you really do see it all coming.
In all honesty there is not really a whole lot of plot, and the story that they have managed to cobble together really is a jumbled mess. This is a premise that has so much promise it is amazing that the writers and the director have managed to screw it up so spectacularly.
As if all that isn’t bad enough, you have also got some terrible CGI to boot; some of the monster creations just look terrible - there really is no other word for it.
This movie’s only saving grace is the chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges; they really do banter well together. But the poor script really does let this very interesting central relationship down.
R.I.P.D. could have been a fast paced supernatural action/comedy; instead it is a jumbled mess that looks like it has just been thrown together. This talented cast have been done a great disservice, and is really is a huge shame.
We have already been treated to some great comic book movies in 2013, but R.I.P.D. is definitely not one of them. This is one of the worst movies that I have seen all year and should be avoided at all costs.
R.I.P.D. is out now.
