Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer

Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer

Director: Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin

Rating: 4/5

Last year protest group Pussy Riot shot to fame after an impromptu performance at Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour - a performance that led to the arrest of three of its members.

Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin team up to bring the bands' story to the big screen from their arrest right through to the result of their trial.

Filmed over the course of 6 months, this documentary tells the incredible story of 3 young women: Nadia, Masha and Katia.

But who is really on trial in a case that has gripped the nation and the world beyond - young artists or the society they live in?

There have already been some fantastic documentaries so far this year, and Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer is just another to add to the list.

This is a movie about courage and the will to stand up for what you belive in; no matter what the consequences.

Nadia, Masha and Katia are the stars of this movie as they speak passionately and fiercely about what they believe in.

We get greater access to these women than you would have expected as the director's got their hands on footage of the trail itself - which really is a riveting watch.

But director's Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin have not just delivered a movie that is pro-Pussy Riot as they have looked at the wider impact and talk to people on both sides; family who supported the girls and those who were deeply offended by their actions.

Sure this movie is on the side of the three women but they director's have not turned their back on those that disagreed with their actions - which is quite refreshing.

This is a movie that show the faces, personalities and lives of the women behind the balaclavas and it really is quite a character study.

The movie does perhaps fail to really investigate the wider issues surrounding this event as well as the international impact, but the movie doesn't suffer for this.

Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer is a terrific watch and you won't be able to take your eyes off these three women who really stood up for what they believe in.

Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer is out now.
