Ben Affleck in Argo

Ben Affleck in Argo

If there is one category that is absolutely impossible to call at this year's Oscars then it is Best Picture.

It is a shame that Skyfall is not in the mix but there are some truly terrific movies that are in contention this weekend.

Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life Of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty are all in the running but there are a couple of favourite sneaking ahead of the rest of the pack.

Argo

If there is one movie that I would love to see walk away with Best Picture on Sunday night then it is Argo as it is such a terrific movie.

In just three films Ben Affleck has established himself as an incredibly exciting filmmaker with Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Argo all enjoying huge critical success.

Affleck's omission from the Best Actor category is nothing short of a disgrace - particularly when you consider he has won this award just about everywhere else.

Argo is a riveting film from start to finish as Affleck notches up the tension and anticipation scene by scene.

He infuses and mixes drama, suspense and comedy into what is practically a flawless movie.

He also finds a great balance between the tension and comedy - he uses the latter well to give audiences a breather but never overplays it so the impact of the former is lost.

Argo is a political thriller of the highest honour and has already won gongs at the Golden Globes, Baftas, Screen Actors Guild and Directors Guild of America.

Many believed that Argo's Oscar chances were gone after he was overlooked for Best Director but it sees this film really has been the dark horse of the award's circuit.

Silver Linings Playbook

Silver Linings Playbook is one of the most touching films to have graced the big screen in 2012 and it comes as no surprise that it has been winning over audiences and critics left, right and centre.

The movie is a big screen adaptation of the novel by Matthew Quick and sees David O'Russell return to the director's chair for the first time since the success of The Fighter.

Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence both deliver knockout performances as Pat and Tiffany; two individuals struggling with their problems who find in each other a friendship.

Silver Lining Playbook is a movie that is packed full of family drama, family dynamics and black humour as well as a lot of heart and warmth.

Russell really has brought the best out of his actors and they have all delivered top notch performances and really brought these troubled and interesting characters to life.

The movie has been picking up awards and nominations over the last few weeks but it really is the performance of Jennifer Lawrence that has been grabbing the spotlight - she could well waltz away with the Best Actress gong.

Harvey Weinstein's company has distributed the movie and he has a great record with the Academy and it's voters - could this be enough to seal a win?

Lincoln

Lincoln was the one film that everyone was talking about as being the major Oscar contender just before Christmas.

But as the awards started to be handed out the hype around the film began to die down.

Lincoln picked up twelve nods when the nominations were announced - leading the way - so could it spring a surprise?

Daniel Day-Lewis is the red hot favourite for the Best Actor gong and his awards success over the last few weeks really have stopped the film from going home empty handed.

The film follows the final years of Lincoln's life as he tries to bring an end of slavery and the Civil War.

The Academy do like a good 'American' film and Lincoln is still very much in with a chance of glory.

The Oscar winners are announced on 24th February.
