Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club

Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club

We are counting down the days until the Oscars, and we are still not sure who is going to win what on the night.

The Best Supporting Actor Oscar looks set to another one that is going to go right down to the wire.

Barkhad Abdi, Bradley Cooper, Michael Fassbender, Jonah Hill, and Jared Leto are all in the running.

Jared Leto does seem to be leading the way, but is there anyone who can stop him from triumphing?

- Jared Leto - Dallas Buyers Club

Jared Leto has been the name on everyone's lips when it comes to the Best Supporting Actor, after turning in a stunning performance in Dallas Buyers Club.

We have not seen Leto on the big screen since Chapter 27 back in 2007 - the acting break really does seem to have done him good.

The film sees him take on the role of Rayon, a HIV-positive transgender woman who befriends central character Ron Woodroof.

Leto really gets under the skin of this character and disappears into her, in what is a spectacular performance.

Like McConaughey, Leto undergoes an extraordinary physical transformation for this role, as he lost a whopping thirty pounds.

McConaughey and Leto together really do elevate Dallas Buyers Club from being just another film about HIV/Aids. Together they have delivered something that is moving and remarkable.

Leto has already won the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Satellite Award - amongst a whole host of others - but missed out on a Bafta nomination. He is a strong favourite for the Oscar.

- Michael Fassbender - 12 Years A Slave

Michael Fassbender has turned in some terrific performances in recent years with the likes of Hunger and Shame: he really should have picked up an Oscar nomination for the latter.

Anyway, he is in the mix this time around for his sensational turn in the hard-hitting 12 Years A Slave: a film that reunites him with director Steve McQueen.

The movie is based on the slavery memoir of Solomon Northup, and sees Fassbender take on the role of plantation owner Edwin Epps.

12 Years A Slave shows Michael Fassbender at his very best, as he delivers the performance of his career so far.

He brings a ruthlessness, brutality, and evil to this role that is incredibly hard to shake after the credits have rolled. He really will send shivers up your spine.

While Fassbender has picked up nominations at the likes of Golden Globes and the Baftas but he has struggled to see off Leto.

It does look like Leto has the Best Supporting Actor category all sewed up, after all of the awards success that he has already enjoyed.

I personally would love to see Fassbender triumph on Sunday night, and he is possibly the only one who can upset Leto: despite the fact that Barkhad Abdi did win the Bafta.

The Oscar winners will be revealed Sunday 2nd March.
