It is hard to believe, but May is upon us and the summer film season is upon us.
Over the next few weeks, we have a series of terrific films not to miss, from blockbusters, to animation to small indie drama.
We take a look at the May movies that you really cannot afford to miss.
- Pompeii - it out now
Kit Harington is an actor who is well and truly on the rise. He is best known for his role as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, but now he has landed his first leading role in Pompeii.
Pompeii sees Harington team up with director Paul W. S. Anderson for the first time, as he returns to the director's chair for the first time since Resident Evil: Retribution.
Harington will take on the central role in the film, and is joined by Carrie-Anne Moss, Emily Browning, Jared Harris, and Kiefer Sutherland.
A slave-turned-gladiator finds himself in a race against time to save his true love, who has been betrothed to a corrupt Roman Senator. As Mount Vesuvius erupts, he must fight to save his beloved as Pompeii crumbles around him.
Harington continues to make a name for himself, and Pompeii looks set to kick start his campaign to be a big screen star.
- Frank - released 9th May
If you not a blockbuster fan, then Frank is one of the alternative films to check out this summer.
The movie has played at been met well at the Sundance Film Festival and Sundance London, and sees Lenny Abrahamson in the director's chair.
Michael Fassbender is back in his first of two May films, and he take on the title role. He is joined on the cast list by Domhnall Gleeson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Scoot McNairy.
Frank follows a young wannabe musician, Jon (Gleeson), who finds himself out of his depth when he joins an avant-garde pop band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank (Fassbender), a musical genius who hides himself inside a large fake head, and his terrifying bandmate Clara (Gyllenhaal).
Fassbender is one of the best actors of his generation, and Frank looks set to be one of the most interesting roles of his career to date.
- The Wind Rises - released 9th May
Of all the animation movies set to be released this summer, The Wind Rises is the one that I am most looking forward to.
Not only is this the latest film from Studio Ghibli, but it sees Hayao Miyazaki in the director's chair for the final time: yes, he is set to retire.
The movie is based on Miyazaki's comic book and looks at the life of Jiro Horikoshi: who designed Japanese fighter planes during World War II.
The Wind Rises has already been nominated for an Oscar, and looks set to bring Miyazaki's to a close with a bang.
Miyazaki has made some terrific films during his career, and he really has been an animation film pioneer.
- Godzilla - released 15th May
We have been given little tasters and teasers as to what we can expect from Godzilla over the last few months... and I cannot wait to see this iconic monster return to the big screen.
The movie marks the return of Gareth Edwards to the director's chair, in what will be his first film since he made his debut with Monsters back in 2010.
A terrific cast has been assembled for this movie, as Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Ken Watanabe, and Sally Hawkins are all on board.
However, Godilla himself is set to be the star of this film, and I can't wait to see him in his full glory.
Edwards did a terrific job making a beautiful looking movie on a small budget with Monsters, and it is going to be interesting to see him tackle the blockbuster for the first time.
-X-Men: Days of Future Past - released 22nd May
If there is one movie that I cannot wait to see this summer, then it is X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Not only does this film bring together the casts of First Class and the original franchise, but it also marks the return of Bryan Singer.
Singer was behind the success of X-Men and X2, and now it looks like he is about to deliver the most epic X-Men movie to date: I really am genuinely so excited for this.
Days of Future Past has one of the best ensemble casts of the year, as Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and Peter Dinklage are all on board.
The movie will follow Wolverine, as he is set back into the past to stop a war before it begins: a war that is devastating for both humans and mutants.
- Maleficent - released 30th May
It has been a while since we have seen Angelina Jolie on the big screen, but this month sees her return as one of Disney's most iconic villains.
We may all know the story of Sleeping Beauty, but how much do we know about Maleficent? Well, we are about to find out.
Jolie looks the business in the title role, and is joined on the cast list by Elle Fanning, Juno Temple, Sharlto Copley, Imelda Staunton, Sam Riley, and Brenton Thwaites.
Robert Stromberg is in the director's chair for the film, and he makes his feature film directorial debut with the project.
Maleficent explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic 'Sleeping Beauty' and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone.
Other May movies not to miss include Bad Neighbours, Sabotage, Two Faces of January, and A Million Ways To Die In The West.
