Should Daniel Day-Lewis win Best Actor tomorrow night he will become the face actor to make it a hat-trick of wins in this category.
Over the years we have seen some of the silver screen's biggest stars honoured multiple time for their work; some have won two Best Actor awards while others have a Best Actor and a Best Supporting Actor gong.
With history potentially just over twenty four hours away we take a look at some of the actors who have won multiple Oscars over the years.
Jack Nicholson - 3 wins
Jack Nicholson is one of only two actors who has been nominated for an Oscar in ever decade from the 1960’s through to the 2000’s and has twelve nominations to his name.
He has picked up eight nods for Best Actor and four for Best Supporting Actor and is the most nominated male actor in Academy Awards history.
In 1975 he picked up his first Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest - he also picked up a Bafta and Golden Globe for his terrific central performance.
Despite all of his nominations Nicholson had to wait until 1983 until he picked up a second award. He was awarded with the Best Supporting Actor for Terms of Endearment.
In 1997 he won a second Best Actor gong for his role in As Good As It Gets.
Denzel Washington - 2 wins
Denzel Washington is one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation and he is no stranger to the Oscars having picked up six nominations for a string of wonderful performances.
His first nomination came in 1987 for his role in Cry Freedom and he would only have to wait a further two years to get his hands on a statuette.
He picked up the Best Supporting Actor award for his role of Pvt. Trip in Glory - also winning a Golden Globe during the award’s season.
In 2001 he became only the second African American to win a Best Actor Oscar for his role in Training Day - it was to be the first Best Actor win of his career. He is nominated this year in this category for his central performance in Flight.
Sean Penn: 2 wins
Sean Penn has been delivering fine performances throughout his entire career and he has been rewarded with 2 Best Actor Oscars.
Penn has been nominated for five Best Actor awards during his career and the first came in 1995 for his role as Matthew Poncelet in Dead Man Walking.
Despite all of the awards recognition that he has got throughout his career he had to wait until 2003 until he finally won the most coveted prize in film.
His firs Best Actor win came for Mystic River, a movie that saw him team up with director Clint Eastwood.
He didn’t have to wait too long for his second gong as he picked up another Best actor award for his portrayal of Harvey Milk in the biopic Milk.
Dustin Hoffman - 2 wins
Dustin Hoffman is one of the most talented and popular actors of his generation and has played a wide range of roles throughout his career.
Hoffman is one of the most nominated actors in Oscar history picked up seven nominations throughout his career.
His first nomination came with just his second movie role as he was nominated for Best Actor for his central role in iconic film The Graduate.
It was 1979 when he finally won as he picked up a Best Actor award for his powerful and moving roles in Kramer vs. Kramer.
He was nominated again for Tootsie but it was with Rain Man in 1988 that he picked up the second Oscar win of his career.
Tom Hanks - 2 wins
Tom Hanks is one of few actors who has won Best Actor on two consecutive years as he was recognised for his work in Philadelphia in 1993 and Forest Gump twelve months later.
His first Oscar nod came in 1988 for his role in Big - the win with Philadelphia was only the second nomination of his career.
He has picked up two further Best Actor Oscar nominations during his career for Saving Private Ryan and Cast Away.
Robert De Niro - 2 wins
Robert De Niro is one of the greatest cinema legends of all time so it is hard to believe that with all the iconic roles he has played that he only has two Oscars to his name.
Even more surprising only one of those Oscars wins came for Best Actor despite five nominations in this category.
Throughout his career he has picked up seven nominations his first win coming in 1974 as won Best Supporting Actor for The Godfather Part II.

Walter Brennan - 3 wins
During his career Walter Brennan won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar on three separate occasions. He currently holds the record of most wins by an actor with Jack Nicholson
Brennan was nominated for times during his career in the Best Supporting Actor category and only once did he fail to win.
1936 was his first triumph for Com and Get It and wins followed in 1938 and 1940 for Kentucky and The Westerner.
