When it comes to tearjerker movies, there are a whole host of films that force us to reach for the tissues. Whether you're a real softy, or a bit of a stone-hearted individual, these seven flicks will without a doubt break you down and let the tears flow! Here are seven movies that made me sob; and will make you ugly cry too!
7. My Girl (1991)
Directed by Howard Zieff, My Girl tells the story of a young soon-to-be-teen female who becomes close friends with a boy. Having never had a motherly figure because of the death of the parent during birth, she's been under the watchful eye of her father, who operates a funeral service out of their home. When her best friend's allergies, brought on by a swarm of bees, brings her world tumbling down, it's not just the characters on screen who are left wailing.
6. Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger moved the world with their performances as Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar respectively in Brokeback Mountain. Set in 1963, the rodeo cowboy and ranch hand are hired in Wyoming as sheep herders, but it's one drunken night on Brokeback Mountain that sees the pair begin an affair that spans over the course of two decades. Despite their love, they're never allowed happiness together, with Ennis marrying his longtime partner and Jack tying the knot with another rodeo rider. This is a torturous love story, where you're rooting for Jack and Ennis to commit to their love, but it never happens. Jack eventually passes away, after becoming the victim of a hate crime. Thus, the floodgates open.
5. A Star Is Born (2018)
With a number of different A Star Is Born iterations making their way to the big screen, nobody knew whether or not Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga could smash the franchise out of the park. Fortunately, the pair did exactly that, with Cooper also sitting in the director's chair. Their characters enjoyed a whirlwind romance which was always shrouded with intensity, and addiction, and whilst the tragic ending was a major shock for audiences watching, it was one we could see coming. Still, that didn't stop the sniffling in cinemas across the globe!
4. Me Before You (2016)
What would you do for love? That's the question posed to audiences in Me Before You; a film that follows the story of Louisa "Lou" Clark (Emilia Clarke) and Will Traynor (Sam Claflin). Paralysed following an accident two years prior, wealthy banker Will is fed up with life, but begins to realise it's worth living when Louisa enters his life and becomes his caregiver. Heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time, this is a beautifully-written novel adaptation with top-notch performances from all involved.
3. P.S. I Love You (2007)
It doesn't take long for the eyes to get misty when watching P.S. I Love You. Hilary Swank's Holly Kennedy loses her husband Gerry (Gerard Butler) to illness, but knowing just how hard life is going to be for his love following his passing, Gerry plans ahead and writes a series of letters, to be delivered when he's no longer with her. Helping to ease her grief, move her life along and encourage her to really 'live' once more, Gerry's commitment to the love for his wife, even in the last months of his own life, leaves a huge lump in the throat.
2. The Lion King (1994)
We've got a live-action adaptation coming up a little later this year, but the Disney classic The Lion King is without a doubt one of the best animated movies the world has ever seen. When Simba loses his father Mufasa at the hands (well, hooves) of a stampede, his cries of trying to wake him up are almost impossible to watch.
1. Marley & Me (2008)
Personally, this is a movie I had to turn off before the credits rolled. When Marley was taken into the vets for his final appointment, I flicked off. I knew how the film was going to end; I didn't need to see it! One day, I'll go back and watch it all of the way through, but wouldn't suggest anybody who has recently lost their pet pooch to get watching too soon after!
