Zack Snyder says he loves developing the mythology of the DC Universe and thinks this is the best part of these movies.
Snyder is set to return to the director's chair next year with Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice - his first film since the success of Man of Steel - and he reveals that he loves finding the drama in the characters.
The director was speaking to Yahoo when he was asked to respond to Steven Spielberg's claims that the superhero movie would eventually go the way of the Western.
And while the director didn't disagree, he said there was more to them than simply being superhero film: "He might not be wrong. I think it puts more pressure on us, the filmmakers, to not just crank out superhero movies for the sake of it.
"To me, the one thing I love working in the DC universe is that Superman and Batman and Wonder Woman are American mythology. It's not about making a superhero, it's a mythological universe that we live in... To me it's about the drama, the humanity of it. Those are like Shakespearean characters, Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent, they have inherent drama built into their makeup."
Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice is already one of the most talked about and anticipated comic book movies of 2016 as Superman and Batman will come face to faces for the first time. It will also be the first time that we have seen Bruce Wayne on the big screen since The Dark Knight Rises.
Ben Affleck will take over the role for the first time, while Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, and Jesse Eisenberg are the other big new additions as Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Lex Luthor. Henry Cavill is back as Superman as he reunite with Snyder.
Warner Bros continues to build its DC universe as we head towards the first Justice League movie. We are also going to see the character of Batman make an appearance in Suicide Squad next summer.
Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice is released 25th March 2016.
